Steen was a devoted, loving, and dedicated woman who committed
herself to God at the tender age of 12 at Antioch Baptist Church.
Dorothy learned the importance of putting God first and wanted to
share her gift of song by becoming an active choir member. Everyone
who knew her knew that she loved to sing.
Dorothy was born March 8, 1946, to the nurturing Alton Dick Mitchell &
Earnestine Smith in Pittsburg, Texas. She departed from us on
September 4, 2020, peacefully surrounded by her loving children.
Working hard with faith can lead us to great things. Dorothy attended
Frederick Douglass High School and graduated in 1964 and later
attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas. She then moved to Houston, Texas,
and married Hubert M. Steen II and started a career with the Houston Independent School
District for many years where she later retired from. Sister Steen was an active member of
Northland Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Frederick Fillmore.
She later in life joined Living Stones Christian Church under the leadership of her son
Pastor Hubert M. Steen III.
Dorothy was widely known for loving her family and she dreamed of winning the lottery so
that she could take care of them. She loved to sing, she loved to cook, and she was an
avid Dallas Cowboys fan. “She’s in heaven now screaming “HOW BOUT THEM
COWBOYS”.
Death leaves a void. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Eugene
Boyd, Jesse Jr., Donnell Hoskins, Alvin Mitchell, and her sister, Bonnie Kennedy. She is
