Born and raised in Flatonia, Texas, she met and married JJ in Praha, TX at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in 1960. They made their home in Houston, TX for over 45 years. After JJ’s passing, she moved to La Porte to be near her daughter Carmen and enjoyed living near the bay.
Dorothy was best known as “Nanny” to her 6 Grandchildren and 4 Great-grandchildren. She loved spending time with them, especially when they played sports. Her beloved dog Pebbles was right along at her side. They traveled to Tennessee and Alabama to attend her grandchildren’s track meets and BAMA football games. She also was a HUGE Texans fan and always cheered on her team when they played the Titans in Nashville. She loved her Astros too. She attended many games with JJ, meeting the team owner and she also liked to collect the team’s mementos.
A 17-year breast cancer survivor, Dorothy was very active completing the Race for the Cure 5K every year with JJ, daughter and grandchildren.
In her spare time, she loved gardening, playing Bunco and fishing with her friends. She also liked to gamble, any chance she had to play the slot machines she would hit the jackpot. She was so lucky!
When it comes to country music, Dorothy was the biggest George Jones fan! She and JJ would spend their weekends attending his concerts at Dance Town USA. Dorothy met George Jones while visiting Franklin, TN and was excited to get a picture together. She carried that picture in her wallet until the day she passed away.
Dorothy was very active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and worked there part-time in the sports bar. But little did you know, for 14 years she worked for Esser & Sons Casket Company designing the interior lining in the caskets. She retired and went to work with JJ to form Quality Welding Works where they built retractable crash cushions for the freeway exits. It was a patented design that they still use today.
In September of 2022, she was living life in the Woodlands at a 55+ Senior Living Community making new friends.
