Dorothy Goudchaux Hyman, age 97, passed away peacefully on Saturday, the 7th of January 2017, in Houston, Texas. Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on the 11th of February 1919, to Leah and Julius Goudchaux, Dorothy grew up in Beaumont, Texas. While attending the University of Texas to study business, Dorothy met Paul Hyman and settled in Austin.
In the years that followed, Dorothy worked alongside her husband as a co-owner of Paul’s Interiors and was a long-time member of Congregation Beth Israel. An avid traveler, she spent her later years seeing the world with her girlfriends. Dorothy took endless pride in the achievements of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be remembered for her zest for life, positive outlook, infectious laughter and killer dance moves.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hyman, her daughter, Karen Hyman Susman, and her brother, Leo Goudchaux. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul Hyman and Laura of Austin; son-in-law, Steve Susman and Ellen of Houston; five grandchildren: Stacy Susman Kuhn and Tom of New York City, Harry Susman and Karen of Houston, Amy Hyman and Gerry Reyelts of Austin, Lindsay Hyman Neuren and Jordan of Austin, Marissa Hyman Sternberg and Todd of Austin; and nine great grandchildren: Nicholas, Sam, Miles, Rachel, Ana, Jack, Hudson, Abe and Lou.
Our family would like to thank Irene, Shirley, Maria and Erika for their compassionate care and devotion to Dorothy through the end of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Dorothy Hyman to Congregation Beth Israel in Austin or to the Jewish Federation of Greater Austin.
