Dorothy Alyne Geiger

Dorothy (Dottie) Alyne Lanier Geiger was born on October 3, 1971, and was surrounded by family when she died on October 17, 2024. Her memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 31, 2024 in the sanctuary at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive, with Reverend Kyle Parrish officiating and Reverend Neil Anderson eulogizing. Arrangements have been made by Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery.

Dottie was born in Amarillo, Texas to parents Suzy Lanier and Bob Lanier. She was greeted by three siblings, Kelleen, Bobby, and Bill. The childhood that ensued was robust and full of activity, especially sports related, and Dottie carried her enjoyment and participation in sports into adulthood. In 1976, Dottie enjoyed the arrival of her younger brother, Matt Lanier. Dottie grew up in Amarillo with her brothers and sister, cousins, and friends of all ages in Perryton, Austin, and Lubbock.

After graduating from Tascosa High School in 1990, she attended Baylor University and graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics. Dottie was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority and served as chairman of the sorority’s intramural program. Upon graduation, she was offered a job as a math teacher at Cy-Falls High School in Houston, Texas, and that first job launched a successful and admired career as a math teacher. In addition to teaching at Cy-Falls High School, Dottie also taught at Katy Taylor High School, The Kinkaid Upper School, where she also coached varsity volleyball and junior varsity basketball, Trinity Classical School, Second Baptist Upper School. Because teaching math was a lifelong, dearly loved activity, she also tutored students in her home.

When she moved to Houston to begin her teaching career, she joined Second Baptist Church where she met Kevin Geiger in a singles class. They married in 2000 and had two children, Chloe Geiger in 2005 and Andrew Geiger in 2011. Dottie and Kevin researched school options for Chloe when the time came, and they decided to enroll Chloe in Trinity Classical School, a Christian school with a hybrid homeschool program. The Head of School described Dottie's role in the development of the school as a mom who helped parents learn how to homeschool math, and as the school grew, she built the upper school math curriculum. He went on to say that Dottie was one of a kind, that she never met a stranger, and that the door to her and Kevin's home was always open. He noted the fact that while she was an avid competitor, she respected Trinity Classical School's desire to have limited sports. Her efforts were directed toward helping make quality sports happen for families by organizing teams, lessons, and clinics outside of the school.

Dottie was a member of the Junior League of Houston, the Tri Delta Houston Alumnae Chapter, and she actively participated in Women’s Bible studies in her church.

Dottie led a purposeful life. In every area of her life, in any endeavor she undertook, she devoted herself completely. It was a joy to watch and to see the benefit her devotion created for her church, for her relationship with her husband, in the development of her children, in her deep love for her extended family, and in the enjoyment of her friends.

Dottie is survived by her husband, Kevin William Geiger, and her children, Chloe Grace Geiger and Andrew William Geiger. She is survived by her mother, Suzy Hodges Lanier, her sister, Kelleen Lanier Adams, and her brothers, Robert Ragsdale Lanier, III, William Hodges Lanier, and Matthew Thomas Lanier. Her nieces and nephew include nieces Blakley Catherine Weatherly, Callie Michelle Lanier, Mila Bronswijk Lanier, and nephew Gainer Wade Riley. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Karen Geiger, sister-in-law Melissa Parma, and her husband Christopher, and her daughter Joie, and sister-in-law Jeanne Geiger.
