Dorothy Evelyn Hewett Cutler of Houston, Texas died peacefully on November 10, 2016. She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 20, 1921. After graduating from C. E. Byrd High School in 1938, Dorothy attended Centenary College 1938-1940, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was a member of Chi Omega for over 70 years and served as President of the Houston Chi Omega Alumni 1970-1971.
Dorothy was a resident of Houston, TX for 76 years. She worked as a medical secretary beginning in 1940 for 17 years. She did hospital volunteer work for 42 years, beginning in 1964 as a member of Hermann Hospital Volunteers where she served as president twice: 1968-1969 and 1980-1981. From 1970-1971 she was president of Houston Area Presidents’ Council of Hospital Auxiliaries. In 1982 Dorothy joined Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, for which she served as president 1990-1992. On the state level, she was a member of the Texas Association Hospital Auxiliaries Board beginning in 1969, president 1976-1977, retired in 2006.
Dorothy joined First United Methodist Church in Houston in 1940. She was Kindergarten Sunday school teacher and later superintendent of that program. She was a member of the Board of Education at First Methodist for 10 years and later an office staff volunteer.
Her husband of 55 years, John Cecil Cutler; her parents, John Marvin Hewett and Dorothy Winans Hewett; her brother, John Marvin Hewett, Jr.; and her niece, Patrice Hewett (to whom she was surrogate mother) precede Dorothy in death.
Her son, John E. Cutler (wife Paula) of Houston; her grandson Christian Cutler (wife Sarah, great grandsons Kai and Finn) of Warrensburg, MO; her granddaughter Leigh Tucker (husband Tyler, great granddaughter Remy) of Seattle, WA; her sister, Harriet Anderson of Arlington, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children survive Dorothy.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at First United Methodist Church.
