Dorothy Louise Conley, loving, generous, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, was called home to meet the Lord Sunday, October 13, 2013. Born November 4, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Margaret Irene Gibson and Louis Benjamin Morgan.
Moving to Houston in 1931, Dorothy attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary, Lanier Junior High and Lamar High School graduating in 1946. On April 20, 1949 she married her loving husband Harry Edwin Conley at The Lord’s Church at 1616 Indiana Street, their home church.
Though proud of her brief career with Texaco at the Hogg building downtown, she chose a life-long career as homemaker with the birth of her first daughter in 1956 following with three more daughters. Love for her children and later grandchildren was shown through-out their lives at countless celebrations, school functions, recitals, sporting events, and graduations.
Never turning away a hand in need, service to the Lord was Dorothy’s life’s joy. A founding member of Grace Community Church, she devoted her time to serving the church in many capacities from bulletins to rummage sales to baking hundreds of homemade desserts; she served many years as Women’s Guild President, Sunday school teacher, choir member, prayer ministry, and in later years on the church board.
Always on the go, Dorothy also thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed the Houston community and all it offered from gospel concerts, theater, rodeo, and basketball, as well as traveling with family and friends across the globe. Wherever Dorothy went, she “never met a stranger.”
Mrs. Conley was predeceased by her parents, and her beloved husband of fifty-six years, Harry E. Conley and is survived by her brother Jim Morgan and wife Bev; her children, Darlene Hostetler and husband Steve, Cheryl Gajeske and husband Ronnie, Carol Fisher and husband Brad, and Judy Herrera and husband William; her grandchildren Aaron Gajeske, Holly Hoelscher and husband Chris, Andrew and Jacob Fisher, and Bobby and Claire Herrera; and her many beloved sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 17, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Friday, October 18, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at Grace Community Church, 1021 Campbell Road, with Reverend Rick Minett presiding. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m., at Memorial Oaks Cemetery with Reverend Jim Morgan presiding.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all those who cared for Dorothy with such kindness, love and compassion in her last year.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to her beloved church, Grace Community Church at 1021 Campbell Road, Houston, Texas 77055
