Dorothy Mae Cedergren went to meet her Heavenly Father on December 13, 2011. She was born in 1918 in Fairfield, Iowa, the first child and only daughter of Alvin and Nellie Leathers. Her mother passed away in 1937 and she had a step-mother, Enolia King for 52 years (her first-grade teacher). She was a graduate of Fairfield High School and Iowa State College after which she taught vocational Homemaking in Griswold and Winterset, Iowa. She was married to Paul H. Cedergren, Sr. for 52 years before his passing in 1994. Following marriage, they resided in Leesville, Louisiana with the Eighth Armored Division until her husband was sent to the European theater. After his return they were at the University of Minnesota where she was a food supervisor at the Memorial Union while Paul pursued his Master's Degree. They were transferred to Houston, Texas where they founded Town & Country Insurance Agency in 1966. She was a licensed insurance agent, member of the Insurance Women of Bellaire and served as Assistant Director of Region VI of the National Assn. of Insurance Women. Upon retirement she and Paul resided on their ranches to raise cattle. Dorothy did extensive genealogy work on numerous related family trees and was an active member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church since January 1961.
Leaving to mourn her death are son Paul H. Cedergren, Jr. of Clear Lake and daughter, Dee Ann Binion and husband, Tommy of Sugar Land, Texas. Her four grandchildren, Hadden Sayers Binion and wife, Dr. Dawn Chandler of Bexley, Ohio, Anne and husband Dr. Kevin Healy of Tempe, Arizona, Laura Cedergren and husband, Randy Stanfield of Gilbertsville, PA and Dori and husband, Billie Graham of Dallas, Texas and two great-grandchildren Cora and Stuart Healy. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Helen Leathers of Fairfield, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Bridgebuilders Class of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy., Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2011 with a reception following at the church. Dorothy will be laid to rest at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, Houston, Texas.
