Doris Vivian Weverstad Watson, 93, died on December 31, 2014, after extended health complications. Born on November 7, 1921, in Taylor, Wisconsin, to Randina and Clarence Weverstad, she was the sixth of seven children. The family moved to Holmen, WI, when she was small and she grew up on a dairy farm there.
Doris graduated from Swedish Hospital Nursing School in Minneapolis and enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a nurse during WWII. She met her husband, Joseph P. Watson, Jr. while stationed at Robbins Field, GA, and they married on Jan. 6, 1946, at the base chapel. After their discharges, Joe was hired by Cities Service Oil Co., and they moved to Gladewater, TX., then to Houston, Texas. Joe started his own company, HGI, in 1970, which he ran until his death in 2006. They were married for 60 years.
Doris supported her husband as wife, mother to their two children, Joseph P III and Vicki, as well as in his professional life , being active in various auxiliaries, Traveling Aggies, and their sponsorship of Presidential Endowed Scholars at Texas A&M. They were members of Tallowwood Baptist Church for many years until her illness. She enjoyed playing bridge, attending golf tournaments with him, and participating in activities at Riverbend Country Club and the Houston Petroleum Club.
She is survived by her son, Joseph P. Watson III, and his wife, Linda, of Jacksonville, FL., and her daughter, Vicki Watson Ash and her husband, Gil, of Fulshear, TX., and her grandchildren, Mark Watson (Tracy) and his sons, Devon Seymour, Tyler, Jake and Aaron Watson, Matthew Watson (Laura) and his sons, Austin and Cole, and Corey Watson Reid (Tony) and her children, Anthony and Amelia, all of Jacksonville, FL, and Casey Watson of Washington, D.C., Andrea Ash Fosmark (Tim) and daughter, Avery, and Brain Ash and his children, Rayden Breennan, and Emma and Joe Ash of Houston.
She is also survived by three sisters, Arlene Dasse of Spring Valley, CA., Leona Gran of Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Inez Brunnemann of Cibolo, TX. and her dear sister-in-law, Peggy Watson of Kingwood, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Graveside services will be at 11 am on January 5, 2015, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas. .
