Doris Lillian Wahlberg, 97 died on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, 2022 in Houston, Texas surrounded by her family. She passed from the loving arms of family to the Loving Arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ. Doris was a third generation native Texan descended from German immigrants who settled in Lavaca County, Texas in the 1860’s. She was preceeded in death by Herbert, her husband of 50 years, her parents Louis and Amanda Baur, and son Wayne Wahlberg.
Doris began her lifelong faith journey in the Lutheran Church through infant baptism and her childhood years that followed. At age 14, she met her future husband Herbert at a Luther League event which blossomed into an ongoing courtship. Doris accepted his proposal for marriage at the tender age of 17. A short six-month honeymoon and Herbert was off to war in the Pacific for a long three years. While he served our country, Doris worked in banking at the Federal Reserve in downtown Houston. Following the nurturing of their four children, Doris returned to work as a medical transcriptionist for Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. She later continued as a transcriptionist for Memorial City Medical Center where she retired in 1989.
Throughout her life, Doris was active in the church. As a venue for her love of music, she served over the years as a fill-in church organist at Grace Lutheran Church in Houston. In addition, she accompanied the children’s choir at Living Word Lutheran Church, Memphis, Tennessee. This four-year period was the only time in her life that the family resided outside of Houston. After returning to Houston in 1968, she and her family joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church, where her musical talents were shared as she accompanied the children’s choir and worked with the Sunday School Children in musical presentations to the congregation.
At home, she was a dedicated mother of four children, totally committed to the well-being of her family without much thought for herself. She tried her best to instill the good by example, and she never wavered in her loving support of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren throughout her life.
She is survived by her children Doris Wooley and husband James, Herbert Wahlberg, Jr. and wife Barbara, Jon Wahlberg and wife Cecilia, and Jackie Wahlberg Fowler, wife of her son Wayne. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, including Laura Beissner and husband Mike, with their children Emily Beissner and Kelly Beissner; Lisa Lindsey and husband David, with their daughter Lekha Lindsey; Jenny Lewin and husband Doug, with their children Joshua, Ari, Rachel, and Ellia; Catherine Wooley; Andrea Wahlberg with her son Alexander Yaklichkin; Scott Wahlberg and wife Ashley; Brian Wahlberg; Kristen Wahlberg Philley and husband Jake, with their children Katherine Jane, Thomas Wayne, and Andrew Lane.
