Doris was born in Houston, Texas at Baptist Memorial Hospital on Sunday September 13, 1936 (A Sunday’s child full of grace). Doris grew up in West University Place, Texas and attended West University Elementary, Pershing Jr. High and Lamar High School prior to being accepted to Rice Institute. She graduated from Rice in 1958 with a BA in History, was on the Dean’s list, a member of Pi Delta Phi and the Presbyterian Students Association. She was several times included on the short list of the most beautiful women in Houston. Her first love was reading, and she worked in the Fondren Library at Rice where she met her first husband Temple Tucker.
Doris married Temple in 1958 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in West University Place where they attended for over 20 years. They had three children, Kevin, Brian, and Carol. Her first job after graduation was teaching as an elementary school teacher and became a mother and housewife after Kevin was born. Doris and Temple divorced in 1979. She began working as an administrative assistant for an oil company executive and met her husband Gordon at a church singles bible study. In 1981 Doris married Gordon Neville and gained two stepchildren, Warren and Allison Neville. Doris was an accomplished singer and loved to play the piano. She sang in the choirs at St. Andrews Presbyterian, Braeburn Presbyterian and Christ Church Presbyterian.
Her highest priorities were her family and that her children and grandchildren had a relationship with Jesus Christ. She also prioritized bible study with friends at church. She loved her family, friends and neighbors. She had a quick wit and a sly, almost mischievous sense of humor. She also had a profound understanding of human nature and a quiet humble wisdom. She will be remembered as always being available to teach her kids important life lessons.
It is fitting that she passed in the month of April as her favorite holiday was Easter. For Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
