Ms. Doretha Mae Mitchell of Missouri City, Texas, passed away Sunday January 3rd, 2021 in the peace and comfort of her bed.
Doretha, often called Sally by her family and Rikki by her granddaughter, was born in Franklin, Louisiana in 1939.
She graduated from Ball High school in Louisiana and went on to Grambling State University where she proudly became a Grambling state tiger and graduated with a degree in Respiratory Care. Doretha moved to Houston, Texas and became the first black female director of Respiratory care at St. Luke Hospital where she retired after working for almost 35 years.
After her retirement, she spent much of her time with her family, going to church and enjoying family road trips, playing bingo, spending time with her friends, and cooking. Doretha spent her final years at Caring Heart Personal Care Home, where she easily became the favorite of the house, often singing, helping the other residents, helping her caregiver cook, and watching her favorite game show wheel of fortune.
Doretha was preceded in death by her parents Melvin Wilson and Delaware Smith; her brother Melvin “Butch” Wilson, and her sister in law Mary B Wilson.
She leaves behind her sister Rosolyn Ann Tanner, of Missouri City, Texas her grad daughter Brittany and great-grandson Brayden, Daughter in law Bridgette and her best friend Malisa.
As well as many more family and friends.
Doretha was a kind, generous soul who truly touched every one she knew. She loved life, and loved the Lord. She would often say, “ the Lord makes a way even when we can not see a way.” Doretha you will be missed more than words can say. We love you and we know you are all our guardian angel. May we meet again on day.
The family would like to thank the owner and staff of Caring heart Personal Care Home who took great care of Doretha and the fine staff of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
