Donnie Joe Carter, Sr. (Don) passed away in his sleep on January 1st of 2022, at the age of 88. He is survived by his daughter Clois Ann Crawford; his son Donnie Joe Carter, Jr. and wife Brenda Kaye Carter; his grandchildren Tyrel Orrin Crawford, Jennifer Kaye Carter, Aaron Michael Crawford, and Laura Ann Carter; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Geneva Pearl Carter, his son Michael Craig Carter, his mother Wreathye Nellie Carter Biddy, his father Julian Millard Carter, his older sister Hazel Irene Bodak, his younger brother Jerry Wayne Carter, his son-in-law Grady Earl Crawford, his step-father James Biddy, and his step-brother Otto Biddy.
Don was born on August 28, 1933, in Georgetown, TX but moved to Houston as a child. He graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston and later obtained an Associate’s Degree for Radio/Telephone/Television Engineering. Don had an incredible work ethic. Before retiring, he worked at KHOU TV as a control room engineer for almost 40 years and was honored with an outstanding service award.
Don married the love of his life, Geneva, on June 14, 1956. They met in the elevator on his first day of work and were married several months later. He was devoted to Geneva, and enjoyed making road trips with her. He lovingly cared for her needs as her health declined until she went to be with Christ in February 2017. It was not unusual to see him holding her hand in between fetching her more iced tea or while watching “The Antique Road Show” and “Wheel of Fortune”.
Don was a generous man who was devoted to his family, making sure they always had what they needed. Over the years, he and Geneva opened up their home on Richelieu Lane to various family members and friends.
He liked sitting outside and walking in the woods. He liked playing 42 dominoes, often bidding “2 marks” before seeing his dominoes and then winning the hand.
Don had a strong faith in God, having trusted in the Gospel of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for his salvation. He was a student of the Bible and held many Bible studies in his home. While we are sad that he is no longer with us, we are rejoicing that Don is now in the presence of Christ and reunited with Geneva.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Lisa, Nicole, Evette, Shelly, Jeanette, Amy, Marie, and Laura for the love and care they showed Don in his last days. Thank you for all that you do in taking care of our loved ones.
The immediate family will be holding a small private service on January 6, 2022 per Don’s wishes.
