Donna Beth (Johansen) McShane

Mrs. Donna Beth Johansen McShane of Houston, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 8, 2023. Mrs. McShane was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was happily married to Donald Joseph McShane for 50 years and together they had five children: Terry Donald Terry), Patrick Joseph (Pat), Mollyann (Molly), Michael (Mike), and Mary Katherine (Katie). Family was her biggest joy in life. Her pride and joy were her five children, her eleven grandchildren and her twenty-one great grandchildren.

Donna was born on July 1, 1924 to Emma Moss Johansen and Wilford Johansen in Mount Pleasant, Utah. Her parents were ranchers, and Donna was the youngest of their eleven children. She spent her childhood in Mount Pleasant and Moroni, Utah where she enjoyed the joys of small town living and the hard work of supporting her father’s ranching life. In keeping with the values that her parents instilled in her, she firmly believed that family was the most important part of life. After losing both parents while she was in her teens, and losing four older brothers while they were fighting in World War II, she relocated to Marin County, California, to live with her oldest sister. With the war still going on, she went to work as a volunteer at Hamilton Air Force Base where she met her future husband, Donald Joseph McShane. During the course of Don’s 30 years of working for Shell Oil Company, their family of seven was transferred over 20 times. The family lived in many communities throughout California, Nevada, Connecticut, Illinois, and Texas. During these years, Don and Donna strongly instilled the importance of family in their own children. Donna often quipped that her career was raising five children and maintaining a sense of stability in spite of all of the moves to new communities and schools. While always prioritizing family events, she found time to enjoy golf at Champions Golf Club, the Garden Club, Bible study, travel, and she loved playing card games. She was known for her sense of style and her beautiful taste in home decor.

After her husband passed, she lived independently 23 years more years in her home in Kingwood, Texas and until age 95, she enjoyed walking two miles daily, making friends everywhere she went. For the last four years she resided at the Tradition Senior Community on Buffalo Speedway in Houston, Texas. While living at the Tradition, she had lots of visits from her adult kids, adult grandkids, her wonderful great grandkids, and even frequent visits from two of the four legged family members. She appreciated all of the staff and caregivers who helped her spend her final stage of life with grace and dignity.

Mrs. McShane was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, their son, Terry and daughter Molly, her parents, and her ten older siblings. She is survived by her son Pat McShane, son Mike McShane, and daughter Katie Smith and their spouses; her eleven grandchildren and their spouses; and twenty-one great grandchildren (listed below).

She was truly an amazing woman. As the matriarch of the family, she was a wonderful role model, mentor, advisor, friend, and inspiration to all of her family. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Mrs. McShane will be interred in the family plot next to her late husband, Donald, and their daughter, Molly, at Brookside Memorial Park on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 12:00 pm. The family has requested this be a private graveside service for the immediate family.
