I remember Don from the Division of Mines and Geology and his joy when Aida was born. He told us how about meeting Daad, that he was expecting an old-fashioned lady and was thrilled that she was Thoroughly Modern.

Don was the epitome of a gentleman and a scholar.  I never saw him without a gentle smile on his face, and genuine encouragement in his voice.  He always had time to explain a process or problem, to analyze the daily office chatter, and to crack a joke or 2.  He delighted in the making light of the silliness around us.  He embellished our prairie dog etiquette in the office cubicle farm, which says that we should refrain from popping up from our cubes to see what's going on next door He loved bizarre safety moments.  One of his favorites featured a guy in sunglasses and  Bermuda shorts wandering over to a cluster of men in HazMat suits to look at what they were digging upmaybe not smart??!  
Daad, you and Don's mom definitely trained Don well.  If you called while we were having lunch, Don would always stop, check his phone, and then announce that he had to take the call because it was she who must be obeyed Susan thought you were actually  a Native American and that was your spirit name for a long time!
For Don, work was his hobby.  He loved mentoring and teaching people and if he learned something in the process, all the better.  Don was an open door to anyone who wanted help.  As Jordan put it, he would go out of his way to find a research paper, and then say, let me explain this to you.  It didn't matter if you were fresh out of school or a 20 year professional, he would treat you with the same joy of instruction and debate on the geosciences. 
JANET: 
One of Don's favorite phrases was that,  'NO' is a complete sentence.  This was usually directed at Sales decisions or  R&D!  
Typical Don humor, but definitely summing up his life experience in the industry, was a quotation pinned on his cubicle wall :  Reports that  say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are Known Knowns'; there are things we know we know.  We also know there are 'known Uknowns'; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.  But there are also Unknown Unknowns' ; the ones we don't know we don't know.  ( Us Dept of Defense press briefing Feb 12 2002) 
He was a visionary geoscientist, part of the generation that developed our global knowledge of many of the world's basin entries and new plays.  The Great Crew Change will be standing on wisdom created by Don and his generation of Geoscientists. 
Finally, after many years in the Middle East, he had a certain acceptance of the absurdity of life's ups and downs, and his typical comment would frequently be Inshallah (God Willing, asking for God's blessing before you need it).

 It was a pleasure working with Don in Saudi Arabia and after fighting many battles in which he was instrumental in advancing the understanding of the geology of Kingdom. My family and I were saddened hearing of his passing.

That smile is one of the things I remember most about Don. Don was one of my first supervisors at Cities Service, where he shared his knowledge of geophysics and geology with enthusiasm. He will be missed by many.  My sympathy for your loss. Cathy Coon Houston, TX

Our family enjoyed Don very much as a neighbor through the years.  I  especially appreciated the interest and enthusiasm he showed in my daughter's pursuit of her geology degrees.  I am so sorry for your loss and I know you'll really miss him.  With deepest sympathy,

What a treasure it has been to be Don's neighbor.  From teaching our boys about tree frogs, to just delighting in listening to them play outside, Don's genuine spirit shined to all.  All of the Daughtry family will miss him.

Aida was and is our daughter Anne's best friend, maid of honor at her wedding, and Don and Daad have for many years been her 'other parents'... We shared some time last Christmas with them, and know how deeply he was and is loved by his family and many friends. We will all miss him, his stories, his more than corny jokes and his wonderful laugh... Travel safely, friend.

Don was a great person. He will be missed in the neighborhood.

Don will be missed by all who knew him, especially his smile and positive attitude. Prayers to the family at this difficult time.

Don was always one of my favorite people here at Landmark.  Even through it all, he always smiled his sweet smile at me as he walked by my desk.  I had such admiration for him. Dr. Don, you will be very missed by us all.
