Hoyt Family, Please accept my heartfelt condolences. May our heavenly father give you and your family comfort at a difficult time. Revelation 21:3 & 4 says that God will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. So I hope you can take comfort with this scripture.

Mary I am so sorry to hear of your loss of your Father.  Wow, your words really say everything about what a great man and father should be. You and your siblings are blessed to be a part of his legacy. I did not know you are a Rice U legacy to both your Mother and your Father.  We just knew you were the smartest in our class at Holy Ghost and Marian and Rice was the place for you.  I know your Dad was so proud of you for all the time you spent with him at the end of his days.  I hate the Covid prevented y'all from attending Mass each week. I am sure it was a great consolation to your family to know you were there always for your parents.   May God continue to bless  the Hoyt Family. 

Dear Mary, Becky, Donald, Margie, Peter, Martha and Sarah and all your extended families, 
   I was so sad to hear of the loss of your dad.  Although we didn't get to spend much time together, I always remember him as a kind, gentle soul with a great sense of humor and obvious love of his family.   I so enjoyed our visits together in Roswell.  I'm attaching a photo of your folks from my wedding in 1993; I like to think of them dancing and rejoicing, reunited in heaven once more. I've always felt my dad was the most wonderful dad that ever walked the earth. So attentive & good to his kids, so loving to our mom. He sang us to sleep every night. He taught me to read before kindergarten. Taught us about stars, planets, science, you name it. He taught us about justice, mercy, racial prejudice, honesty, faith, etc. He even played games with us, after a hard day at work. His (& our) favorite was when Mom was gone somewhere, he'd get us all excited to surprise Mommy by cleaning up the house! or whatever.  We'd get all excited to do that.
He loved Mom so much, he was heart-broken when she died. He never got over his grief, and his health went downhill fast. He certainly raised me up so I could stand on mountains, and be more than I could be - and he was the wind beneath my wings.  I love him so much.  Thank you so much, God, for letting me have this wonderful man for my Dad.

I did not know him but from the beautiful picture you've painted with your words, I can certainly sense that we have lost a good, principled, driven and smart family man. It is wonderful to see that until the very end he was cherished by you and surrounded and adored by family.  From what I know of you personally, I am certain that he must have been very proud of you and all of your accomplishments. May he find a beautiful place in heaven next to your mother, and may you and your family find solace in this time of sorrow.

Dad was an amazing man. He was smart, kind & gentle. He would write mom poems & stick them on the refrigerator for all the family to see. He taught us kids about the stars & gave us a sense of wonder about the Universe. He was always doing "Dad Jokes". He & mom put 7 children through (or almost through) college. He sang us to sleep at night, taught us how to play softball/baseball & I felt safe with him. He taught us to do what is right.  I will love him always.

There are five words that always run together in my mind when I think of my Hoyt side of the family: Aunt Patty and Uncle Donald- and now those words are lovingly back together. The joy that must be theirs. 
With a ready smile, fast quip and a willing hand, this is how I remember my Uncle Donald. Wearing a ball cap, having his glasses case in his top pocket and throwing a frisbee at the beach with his children, that is how I will always think of him and his gentle ways. All my love at this time.

Dad was the most kindhearted, friendly, amazing person I have ever known and a wonderful father. He and Mom raised 7 kids! Seven! He kept a roof over our heads, kept us well fed, clothed us and gave us a happy childhood. As kids, he would help us with our homework, he drove us on vacations all the way to New York, fixed EVERYthing in the house, in the cars and the yard, he built playhouses, forts, animal enclosures, gave shoulder rides and told jokes that kept us all laughing and smiling. Whatever was needed, he was always there. 

Dad made us feel accepted and loved, he allowed us to make our own decisions and mistakes and stood by us through it all. By his example, he showed me how important strength of character is. He showed me that the purest form of happiness is by making other people happy. He showed me how important it is to volunteer, to play sports and be a good sport. He showed me how to accept responsibility for my own mistakes and move on with the knowledge gained.

Dad was a brilliant man, with a poet’s heart. He shared his love of music and poetry with all of us. How many fathers would sing their kids to sleep? How many kids got to feel that most comforting feeling of falling asleep to their fathers soothing voice? And yes, he suffered through each child’s sorrows, always there, always the rock that we could hold on to for support. 

So, thank you Dad, thank you for being you and giving me my life. I will miss visiting with you and listening to your wise council. I’ll always look to the stars and when I see a rainbow, I will think of you. Hopefully I can make others smile as you always did for me. 


I’m just starting, and it just feels like I’ve run out words to describe my Dad, and how grateful I am for everything he taught me. How to fix things, how to analyze problems, how to be kind. I know he lives on in all of us, but his heartfelt laughs, his calming voice, his understanding smiles… now only in my memories, and for how long? Our Dad was a great man. What more can you say? I’ve tried to memorize the stars and constellations just to honor him, but for some reason, I can’t. But I fix old cars and bicycles because of him. I am a scientist because of him, I can solder wires because of him. I watch the moon and stars, comets and asteroids because of him. So many things he’s given to me and to us all. These gifts can’t be completely listed, and right now, my pain prevents me from thinking about them all. But every time I do something, and I remember he taught me that, I’ll miss him terribly.  His greatest compliment to me was to say I had a “gentle touch”. I try to live that memory, and praise, every day. Our family, despite its size, remains firmly rooted in unconditional love for each other because he, and Mom, expected nothing less. The world is just not as good as it was a few days ago, and while we must move on, we move forward as better people because he helped make us that way. I love you Dad, May you and mom be together forever in the great unimaginable universe of our next existence. Tell God a pun for me. Look down and protect us all. God willing, we’ll see each other again.

Your mom and dad had the best smiles, were so often laughing.  They were kind, generous and always loving.  I am missing both of them, but glad they are together again and no longer in any pain.  Sending all our love and prayers from North Carolina.  Love, Maria, Eric, Brittany and Lise

So many memories of my dad! Probably the most treasured one is singing us to sleep every night. Our favorite song was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".  And when my kids were born, I sang to them every night, too.  I learned more from Dad than I can even say. He was a loving father, a truly good, honest and intelligent man, and I miss him terribly. I like to think that he is with Mom now, and I know he wanted to be with her again more than anything. I love you forever, Dad.

Dad was my hero. He was the strongest and smartest man I ever knew. And the silliest, which amused us all so much. The love he showed to us (his children) and especially to his wife (our mom) impacted all of us. He raised the bar on what it was to love and be loved. Today is his and Mom's 75th wedding anniversary, and they are spending it together again. I will miss them both so very much, but I'm so happy they are reunited.
