Dixie was born on August 3, 1936 in Clovis, New Mexico to Arthur Thomas Strother, Jr. and Thalia Marie Strother. Dixie attended high school at Milby High School in Houston, Texas. Married to Bobbie “Bob” Bernard Brewer, together they raised three sons and a daughter: Kirby Alan, Leah Marie, Rick Bernard, and Kean Arthur Brewer. She lived most of her adult life in the house they built together in the Spring Branch area.
Dixie was a spirited and adventurous person. She was a lover of poetry, books, eye-catching jewelry, scary movies, classical music and opera. She had a big heart, often taking in friends, family or strangers in need of a hot meal or a place to stay. She had a talent for making something clever from nothing but scraps to delight small children. Professionally, Dixie had a varied work life: an occupational therapist in hospitals, a realtor in Albuquerque, and a licensed minister. Dixie retired from the University of Texas Medical Branch as an office manager, where she was like a great aunt to many of the MD/PhD students. She also had an active spiritual life, performing several weddings and serving as Deacon at her church.
Dixie is preceded in death by her mother and father, son Kean Brewer, and grandson Jakob Bernard Brewer. She is survived by sister Maxie Lee Strother (Jimmy) and brother Arthur Thomas Strother III (Martha); children Kirby Brewer (Susan), Leah Hall (Stephen), Rick Brewer (Sheila), and Cindy Slane; son-in-law James Laufenberg (Mike); grandchildren Heather Marie Vaughan (Arwen), Jennifer Nicole Long (Micah), and Chais Arthur Brewer; and great-grandchildren Theo Kean Vaughan, Maddox Taylor Vaughan, Logan James Long, Skylar Kean Long, Seth Thomson, Alexia Brewer and James Ferguson.
The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to the many caregivers, friends, and family who were with her through the difficult times near the end of her life, especially Mary Rivera, Cindy Slane, and Tom “Uncle Buddy” Strother.
Family and friends gathered and shared memories of this wonderful woman during a beautiful celebration of her life at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 4, 2024, at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road in Houston, where a reception followed the service. Dixie's urn was laid to rest at Green Hill Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
