October 18, 1945- September 6, 2021
The world lost one of its brightest stars early Monday, September 6, 2021, when Kaye died at a local Houston hospital after complications following recent cancer treatments.
She was born Diana Kaye Dyer in Austin on October 18, 1945, but was known as Kaye from early childhood by all who were blessed to have her cross their path in life.
Kaye was pre-deceased by her parents Spencer and Ora Dyer, and brother Allan Spencer Dyer all of Austin.
Kaye is survived by her husband of 57 years, Howard Dunbar, and sons Christopher Dunbar and wife Nancy, Brandon Dunbar and wife Beth, plus precious grandchildren Maddie, Spencer, Owen and Patterson Dunbar, all of Houston. She is also survived by cousins Ed Dyer and wife Becky also of Houston, and Darlene Dyer Whittington and husband Richard of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Kaye was blessed with long-time neighborhood and career friends and needed a social programmer to spend time with all, thereby many hearts are broken by her passing from this life to her eternal one with her Heavenly Father.
After growing up Austin, graduating from Austin High in 1963, and then Texas State in 1967, Kaye became a lifelong teacher of young children. Her career began with brief stints in Austin and Dallas, followed by over 20 years at The Briarwood School and Houston ISD until her retirement in 2010 while at Barbara Bush Elementary. Along with teaching she often tutored young minds in her home to strengthen their skills and their self-confidence.
Kaye’s death was sudden even though she had been struggling for last few months. She was forever hopeful of the cure for the cancer, future rehabilitation and a return to her many activities, especially to precious family time with grandkid sleepovers, her Sunday School class of seniors at Tallowood Baptist and her bridge table with the “Bridgettes” plus so much more.
Kaye was a great hostess and loved to cook, always trying new recipes to share with family and friends. She loved to lend a helping hand, an ear to listen or anything her friends and family needed. Her infectious smile and sense of humor were highlighted by her deep faith as her core of strength. Kaye in one word, Joy!
