Delbert Wayne Hampton, 87, of Seabrook, TX passed away April 30, 2023. He was born August 10, 1935 in Houston, Texas to John Hicks and Cora Mae Walling Hampton. Delbert is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sherry Ann Sivil Hampton, daughters Ginger (Keith) Smith and Robin (Tom) Gibson, along with his brother Robert (Marialice) Hampton. Delbert is also survived by six grandsons: Brandon (Rebecca) Smith, Jared (Alison) Smith, Michael Gibson, Mitchell (Sarah Beth) Gibson, Adam (Michaela) Gibson, and Aaron (Taylor) Gibson, and 4 great grandchildren: Eli, Madilyn, and soon to be born baby girl Smith, and Everett Gibson.
Delbert and Sherry met at Galena Park High School, graduating in 1953. They married two years later on April 16, 1955. Sherry worked while Delbert attended the University of Houston to study architecture. He discovered his true passion was designing tugboats and barges, along with consulting in that industry. He worked at Todd Shipyard, Kelso Marine, Waller Marine, and also started his own business, Marine Technical Services. He found satisfaction in working with the designs and hands on work of building barges, and seeing them launched into the water upon completion.
Delbert enjoyed traveling and collecting antiques with Sherry. He liked the challenge of restoring and rebuilding old clocks. He loved cars, and was happy to teach his grandsons anything they wanted to learn about them. He worked on classic Corvettes, and a 1929 Chevrolet, just to name a few.
He was proud of his six grandsons. He enjoyed fishing with them, attending their athletic, music, and church events, playing cards and other games with them, cooking his famous omelets for everyone over the holidays, and taking family trips. Colorado was typically the chosen destination, but he was happy to go to amusement parks and ride rides too.
Delbert was an active member of Nassau Bay Baptist Church in Houston, TX since 1969.
Pallbearers will be his six grandsons: Brandon and Jared Smith, Michael, Mitchell, Adam, and Aaron Gibson. Honorary pallbearers will be his sons in law Keith Smith and Tom Gibson, great grandson Eli Smith, brother Robert Hampton, and nephew Jimmy Sivil.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, TX 77039, with visitation prior to the service at 10:00 am.
