An athlete, coach, musician, songwriter, teacher, mentor, public speaker, lawyer, writer, rancher, father and friend, DeEdward lived a full life of learning and adventure. He captained the Rice University tennis team to a Southwestern Conference title; wrote, performed and recorded a library of songs with his band, The Sixpence; coached multiple junior hockey teams from Houston to National Championships; argued difficult cases in some of the highest courts, and championed the cause of many left behind by the justice system.
He was a voracious learner and writer. His compassion for people was boundless and he inspired so many of us to succeed. His purpose in life was to use his curiosity to discover new things, and to enthusiastically inspire others by his teaching and coaching, which was exactly what he did. Whether it was his own children, his teammates, bandmates, his defendant clients, or the youngsters from Japan, whom he taught American Culture, English, and Public Speaking. He improved all our lives through his learning and inspiration. He wished for everyone to support each other in harmony, and to feel joy in their daily lives.
DeEdward is survived by his three children, Robert Bradley Greer, Laurie Anne Greer and Mark DeEdward Greer; and his grandchildren, Marye Stuart Greer, Meredith Lee Greer and Julian Autry Wu; as well as his best friend, coworker and confidant, Mackie Moore; and the love of his life and the force of happiness in his later years, Miyuki Kobayashi. We all loved him and will miss him very much.
DeEdward Greer and Miyuki Kobayashi both loved the poem below as an expression of their love, their love for each other, and for their love of life.
"You Can Design Your Own Destiny" by Vickie M. Worsham
You are a wonderful person,
so do wonderful things.
You can make a difference in your world...
you have a purpose....
you have the power....
you are magic.
You can create beauty,
recall the past,
plan the future.
You can soar in imagination.
You have the courage to question,
and you can choose to change.
The only limitations you have are those in your own mind.
Don’t be satisfied with less than all you can be.
Don’t compare yourself with others.
Draw your own dreams and design your own destiny.
Live each day to the fullest.
Give a little more than you take.
Make this world a better place to live.
And always... always listen to your own heart.
For only you know what is best for you
