David Hammond Roberts was born September 24, 1938 in Wichita, Kansas. He passed away November 15, 2017 in Houston, Texas. He was born to Anna Mae Hartong Roberts and Hammond Allgood Roberts. David was preceded in death by his life partner, Donald James “Jim” Ryberg and his parents, Hammond and Anna Mae Roberts. Together, they owned The Floruim African Violet Shop and The Out of Print Bookstore. David received his BA in Psychology at the University of Kansas and his MA at Wichita State University. He taught in Kansas City Schools and Creighton University before moving to Houston in 1975, where he worked for HISD as a diagnostician. He is survived by his brother, James Charles Roberts of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; his sister, Rosemary Ann Hughes of Fresno, California; nephews, Christopher Cooper of Redmond, Oregon, Ryan F. David Comeaux of Denver, Colorado; and niece, Robin Engle of Butte, Oregon. He is also survived by his caregiver, Ricardo Rodriguez and his three dogs. David was a member, active volunteer, and lay pastor at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and held various positions with the Houston Daylily Society. A visitation will held on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church 1819 Heights Blvd Houston, Texas 77008 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Jimmy Grace officiating and inurnment will be at a later date in Hollywood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
