"Rio" spent his early career working at a Boys Ranch in Nacogdoches, where he helped many get back on their feet. Some of those boys, now men, say Rio played a pivotal role in helping to save their life. Big Dave spent 25 years working in the Petro-Chemical industry at Dow, formerly known as Rohm and Haas, as a process technician.
Well known for his cooking, it was this passion of his that oftentimes brought everyone together at the dinner table.
David's love for hunting and fishing remains unmatched and could not be rivaled by many. He shared his love of outdoors with family, friends, and anyone who could cast a line or shoot a gun. "Vit" to his brother completed the infamous "Riojas Duckmen Team" of Sagemont. Any morning with the Team will never be forgotten.
David's football career started early at the local neighborhood football fields. Then the Junior High Thompson Lions. High School Varsity Jr. and Sr. Year for J. Frank Dobie Longhorns AKA "Cookie". "Rio" then played two years starting right tackle for Tyler Junior College. Then finished his college degree in Criminal Justice playing starting offensive linesman for Stephen F. Austin.
