David Vaughan Hyde was born January 21st 1944 in Houston, Texas. David is one of the original true North Siders. He attended Jeff Davis High School graduating in 1962. David Served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1967 and was honorably discharged. He was deployed to Vietnam during his time of service. After the service David worked for Gray tools for a period of time. Then he worked for Southern Pacific Railroad as a brakeman/conductor for 19 years.
After retiring from the railroad, David opened Hyde’s Café in Old Town Spring. It quickly became the place to go for the best hamburger, ribs and the coldest beer anywhere around. If the kids ate their meal’s they got to go to the back of the café with Mr. Hyde to pick their flavor of Blue Bell Ice Cream. The café was like taking a step back in time with the vintage memorabilia and the best jukebox for miles. The café had live classic country music weekly with musicians who have played with some of the greatest country legends. David could always be found guiding the staff and welcoming all who walked through the screen doors behind his steering wheel at the end of the famous red counter. When trains would come down the track’s they would often blow their whistle when they passed the café and café patrons would raise their bottle and whistle back. The café was a gathering place that sparked many lifelong friendships and memories and in David’s words was “Oh what a family place!”
David had various hobbies through life such as coin collecting and fishing. And he loved to go to the Casino to play some cards and the machines. His passion was walking at Mercer Arboretum. You would find him there on a daily basis. Loved his famous daily facebook check in. He always knew what was going on and became friends with everyone. Everywhere we went someone knew David.
He was a legend in his own time!
