David Michael “Mike” Grimes, Sr. passed away on Friday, the 25th of January 2019. He was born on the 22nd of January 1941 in Beaumont, Texas. He was the oldest of three children born to Daffon and Helen Grimes.
Mike attended Lamar University where he met the lady he simply could not live without, Martha Nell Coffman. They married in 1962 and were a terrific team for over fifty-six years until her death just three months ago.
Not one to sit still long and easily bored by routine, Mike had several careers and ventures over his lifetime. His unique ability to establish and build relationships throughout his life resulted in a large collection of true friends – most of whom he met through his business dealings. His generosity was received by numerous students, young families and others in need of a helping hand whether he could afford to help or not. He felt that a “second chance” was the most valuable gift a person could receive and he gave it freely to others.
Mike leaves behind many great times he created for his friends and family, endless laughter derived from his wicked sense of humor, and a wide swath of compassion that touched all those he encountered. He is survived by his only child, David Michael Grimes, II, his wife Windi Grimes, and only grandchild, Martha Hall “Hallie” Grimes.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Mike during a reception to be held from five o’clock in the afternoon to seven o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 29th of January in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The memorial service is to be conducted at half-past one o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 30th of January at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street in Houston.
