David “Jed” Crump was born in Brownwood, Texas, July 17, 1948, the much-loved son of Ocie W. and Reva E. Crump. He married “the joy of his life,” Alma R. Aguilar, April 25, 1984. He passed away June 26, 2014, in Houston.
Growing up with an older brother Wayne and a younger sister Janice, and spending time with a host of cousins, David/Jed was the adventuresome member of the family. He loved sports, was usually found outdoors, and was always in the middle of things.
As a young man, music played a major role in his life. He played in a band for several years, then managed a blues club in Austin. Almost by accident, Jed began buying and selling rare coins, which led to a lifetime vocation.
In the mid 1970’s, Jed formed a business partnership with Pat Johnson, a successful coin dealer who with his wife Sylvia owned Houston Numismatic Exchange. For the remainder of his life, Jed ran Pat Johnson Rare Coins, specializing in foreign coins. He became widely known among the nation’s coin dealers and collectors.
Jed met his wife Alma when she came to Houston to work for her sister and brother-in-law at Houston Numismatic. During their thirty years together, they enjoyed being part of this family business, now run by Alma’s nephew Jay Johnson.
Jed’s hobbies were varied – golf, fishing, reading, playing trivia with teams of friends, and visiting with his family and many friends. When his name is mentioned, it is common for friends to say, “Oh, everybody loves Jed.”
Jed is survived by his wife Alma R. Crump of Houston, his sister Janice Crump Bezanson and her husband Steve Bezanson of Salado, sisters-in-law Sylvia Johnson of Houston, Donnis Crump of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Teresa Fragoso and Susy Rodiguez Aguilar of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Jed’s nephews include David Bezanson and his wife Elizabeth and son Walter, Joel Crump, Evan Crump, Jeff Johnson, Jay Johnson and his wife Jennifer and their children Ryan and Amy, Adan R. Aguilar and wife Melissa and son Elliott. Nieces include Haydee R. Aguilar and husband Miguel Austria and their children Axel and Frida. Also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends. Jed was preceded in death by his parents, Ocie and Reva Crump, his brother Wayne Crump, and his brother-in-law and partner Pat Johnson.
Services for David “Jed” Crump will be at noon Thursday, July 3, 2014, in The Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Burial will follow in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
The family encourages those wishing to make a memorial donation to designate St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or their favorite charity.
