January 7, 1942 – June 12, 2016
The Lord took home His Faithful servant. David, 74, died peacefully, at his home in League City, of congestive heart failure with his devoted and loving wife Sue Harris Cameron, and faithful dog, Chino by his side.
He was born in Houston, Texas at St. Joseph’s Hospital to Victor E. Cameron and Marjorie Pecore Cameron. He had two older sisters, Shirley and Sylvia and a younger sister, Suzan. His parents and loving eldest sister, Shirley Cameron Davis, have preceded him in death.
David attended St. Christopher’s School, Marian, Lamar and St. Thomas High School. Feeling the impending trouble that was brewing in Vietnam, he dutifully served his Country in the United States Air Force. During his service, he was stationed in El Paso, Texas where he met his first wife and mother of his children, Carol Bibby Cameron Smothers. They had two children, Stacey and Steven and lived there until 1983 when David and Steven moved to The Woodlands, Texas near his loving and nurturing sister, Sylvia.
David’s life would be forever changed when he met his future bride, Sue Harris Cameron and her daughter April. They were married on July 1, 1995 at his sister Sylvia’s oasis in The Woodlands. April gave David and Sue the priceless gift of being grandparents to her beautiful children Cameron, Jewel and Gabe. Sue and David lived in Seabrook before moving to League City.
David worked at Cameron Iron Works, in banking while living in El Paso, brokered yachts and served as a Councilman for the City of Seabrook. He served on various boards, civic and charitable organizations in Houston, Seabrook and Galveston. He loved sailing and was a certified volunteer sailor on the 1877 tall ship The Elissa and enjoyed many sails out of the Port of Galveston. He often sailed yachts from port to port for various individuals and participated in many of the Harvest Moon Regatta’s.
In December 1983, David was elected to serve as Trustee of the Harry S. & Isabel C. Cameron Foundation, a Foundation established by his grandmother, Isabel, in 1966. David served as Trustee for 33 years, until his death. During his time of service, David championed many important areas of funding for the Catholic Church, education, the arts, troubled youth, abused women, those with substance abuse and the elderly. He was faithful to his Grandmother’s desire to serve her Church and the community, making it a better place for those in need.
A pivotal date in David’s life was September 21, 2002. This was the day he got sober with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous and Memorial Hermann’s PaRC (Prevention and Recovery Center). It was from this life changing experience that David dedicated his life to recovery and giving back; He became a LCDC (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) working at the Memorial Hermann PaRC and other places, where his counseling service, helping those with substance abuse, was needed.
David wrote a letter to his daughter Stacey about the changes he felt in his new sober life: “When I begin to meditate, I use a mantra over and over to try and center myself so I can be open and hear God. That mantra is peace. With that one word, I can feel fear slowly fade and I can realize my fears are usually on my own making. We are born for wonder, for joy, for hope and for love; to marvel at the mystery of existence. Love Always, Dad”.
David had the alias of “Mad Max” in the Alternative MC, a clean and sober motorcycle club founded in 1994. The club and all of its members adhere to the principles and traditions of the 12 Step Recovery Program. He was an active member of the local Santa Fe chapter. He held several positions during his time with the club. At the time of his passing, he served the position of National Treasurer. He was highly respected by his fellow patch holders and will be greatly missed. He now rides the wind with the Forever Chapter. Ride in Peace Max~ GBNF.

“Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny. May God bless you and keep you – until then.” Alcoholics Anonymous Page 164
