David Randolph Adam of Austin, TX passed away in his home at 83 years of age on Saturday, February 19, 2022. He was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living life with an open heart and kindness toward others, just as he did so well. He is survived by Cecile Adam, his wife of 21 years. He is also survived by Beth Adam, his former wife, and her wife, Loretta Turner. His complete family includes eight children and their spouses and eight grandchildren, whom he always spoke of as his greatest accomplishment in life: Julie Adam and Denise Horowitz, Maribeth and Bill Granger, George David Adam, Cathleen and Rommel Eclarinal, Laurie Adam, Blythe Adam, Laura Ervin and Annie Ervin and Sebastian Wren. His grandchildren affectionately called him gramdaddy, pops, and grandpa: Nicholas Woods, Chance Love, Meghan Hawk (Jacob), Greyson Granger, Tristan Doyle, Miles Eclarinal, Cole Eclarinal, and David Derrick. Preceding him in death was his father Dr. George F. Adam and his mother Julie Guest Adam.
David was a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas, graduating from St. Thomas High School, class of 1956. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, he served in Army Intelligence as a second Lieutenant. He began his civilian career as a geologist for Sun Oil Company. Ultimately, David found his natural gift in fundraising. Throughout his life, his diligence and commitment to his work meaningfully impacted the communities and organizations he served: The March of Dimes, Houston Chamber of Commerce, Austin Chamber of Commerce, NCDS (National Community Development Services), UT Health Science Center of Houston, Austin Economic Development Council and Huston-Tillotson University. He had a love for traveling to the towns in which he worked and making connections with those he met along the way. A great source of pride for him, David built and enjoyed a successful career over his lifetime.
David was most at peace just being outside in the sunshine on the back deck of his home. He often enjoyed a cigar while reading a paper or just taking in the simple pleasures of nature. As a young man, David cultivated a passion for photography. His photographs and videos over the years are a testament to his love for his family. When his children were younger, he and his best friend loved taking road trips and camping with their big bunch of children. Just like his mom, David never met a stranger. He always made the time to ask someone how their day was going and showed a genuine interest in other people’s lives. Over the years he and Cecile enjoyed dining out and making friends at their favorite spot in Austin, and the servers came to know their kindness well. Just like one of his favorite songs, David was a “sharp dressed man” with a flair for elegant suits, silk ties and always his signature colognes.
A humble and good man, David left us with the truth that to love and be loved in return is all that truly matters.
The funeral mass will be held at St. Michael’s the Archangel Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd., Houston, TX 77056, on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at 10:00 am. Please join the family after the mass for more personal remembrances and refreshments.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to David’s many wonderful caregivers, especially Roberto, Kenny, and Patrick as well as Lloyd and the good people at Sonder Hospice for their thoughtful, compassionate and professional care.
