Born in the close-knit community of Eagle Lake, Texas, on November 2, 1945, Darrell's life was a tapestry woven with threads of service, love, and courage.
From a young age, Darrell displayed an unyielding commitment to excellence in all his pursuits. As he journeyed through elementary, middle school, and junior high in Eagle Lake, he left a lasting impression on his teachers and peers with his thirst for knowledge and an insatiable curiosity for learning. Eagle Lake High School witnessed the brilliance of his mind as he graduated with the highest of honors.
For two consecutive years, Darrell's exceptional scientific prowess earned him the prestigious Navy Science Cruiser Award in San Diego. This recognition spoke to his outstanding talents and foreshadowed the extraordinary path he would embark upon.
Fulfilling his dreams, Darrell joined the esteemed Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University, where he pursued a degree in Industrial Engineering, graduating with the Class of 1968. He joined the United States Army, where he would go on to serve with bravery and dedication in Vietnam with the Special Forces. Throughout his military career, Darrell's commitment to his country was unwavering, and he was a beacon of inspiration to all who served alongside him. Upon returning from the war, he began a long and successful career in the electrical power industry at Siemens, Emerson, and General Electric.
Darrell found his greatest joy and fulfillment in his family. With Monique, his beloved wife of 45 years, by his side, they built a life of love, respect, and unwavering devotion. The joys of fatherhood brought him immense pride, and his sons, Mark and Tommy Hogge were his greatest source of happiness. Though Tommy preceded him in death, their bond will forever remain a cherished memory. Darrell's parents, Elmer Alvin Struss and Dorothy Slaton Struss, were the foundation upon which his character was built. Their unwavering love and guidance nurtured him into the remarkable man he became, and their spirit will forever live on in his heart.
Darrell leaves behind a legacy of selflessness and dedication to his family, friends, and nation. His engaging personality, charisma, ever-present sense of humor and positive outlook on life touched us all and will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
