Mr. Darrell Wayne Crooks

On November 11, 1956, a beautiful baby boy was born to Joe and Ethel Crooks. At the age of three months, he was baptized in the Methodist Church by Rev. J. E. Valentine at Wayman Chapel Methodist Church, Houston, Texas.

He attended HISD and completed his education at High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where he sharpened his musical training. In his earlier years, he was on the road with several promoters. He later played with Archie Bell and the Drells. The first band he formed was called Soul Expressions, just a group of neighborhood kids that got together and made music. Later he performed with a group called Heaven the Band and they went on to perform on Star Search, a TV talent search show, and they won several times. At the age of eighteen he decided to remain in California where his musical career began. With his amazing knowledge of music and phenomenal talent, he as able to perform with many artists at a moment’s notice. He traveled domestically and internationally with his beloved guitars. His career expanded over four decades and he never stopped making music. He was well respected among his peers. He loved GOD, family, and his music.

Darrell served faithfully for 9 years as Minister of Music under the leadership of Dr. Joseph P. Metoyer Jr. at ACTS Church in Los Angeles.

He leaves to mourn Joe Crooks (dad), Ethel Crooks (mom), Sondra Blunt (sister), Timmie Crooks (brother, wife Cynthia), Alicia Crawford (fiancé), three nieces, one nephew, three great great nephews and a host of family and friends.

Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 8787 N Houston Rosslyn Road, Houston, TX 77088. A he is laid to rest will occur Saturday, February 19, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Paradise Cemetery North, 10401 West Montgomery, Houston, TX 77088.
