The Life & Legacy of Bishop Dan E. Goodman, Sr.~ Bishop Goodman was born February 18, 1933 to John Dallas and Rosie Lee Goodman in Athens, TX. Baptized at the age of 8, Bishop Goodman was active at the Church of Living God, Athens, TX and served in the Youth Choir and the Youth Department. Bishop Goodman was educated in the public schools of Athens, TX and received his Diploma from Fisher High School. He attended college at Texas Southern University here in Houston where he met and fell in love with Melba Harper and they were married on July 14, 1957. Bishop Goodman graduated from TSU in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He went on to complete his graduate work and earned a Master of Science Degree in 1962. He earned a Doctorate of Theology Degree in 2002 from Vision International School of Ministry. He taught in the Houston Independent School District for 33 years. While with HISD, he worked as a Science Teacher at Ryan and Sharpstown Jr High schools, and Robert E.Lee High School. He also worked as a Curriculum Writer, Instructional Coordinator, Budget Director and Vice Principal for HISD's H.P. Carter Career Center. Some of Bishop Goodman's many accomplishments include; serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict with an honorable discharge, serving on the Legislative Committee of the Texas State Teachers Association, serving as Lay Chaplain for City of Houston hospitals, co-founding Church of The Living God Temple#1's Senior's Day Out Ministry, founding Branch Village Youth Apartment Ministry, facilitating several radio broadcast ministries, and founding Incredible Word Bible College. Bishop Goodman loved God with all his heart and served Him faithfully and passionately. In June of 1959, he preached his first sermon at the Church of the Living God, P.G.T., and Temple #18. In 1960, he received his first pastorate at Della Street Church of the Living God, P.G.T. and built his first church during the same year. Della Street later merged with Church of the Living God, Temple #1 where Bishop Goodman continued to Pastor. In 1980, God blessed the congregation to build the church at its present location, 2110 E. Crosstimbers where Bishop Goodman continued to Pastor until the present. Bishop Goodman served faithfully in the General Assembly Church of the Living God, P.G.T. for about 20 years. Some of the capacities he served in were Recording Secretary, Bishop of Arkansas, Bishops' staff member who worked in securing Cleme Manor Apartment Project in Houston, TX, President of Ministers Council in Houston, TX (8 yrs.), publisher of church newsletter, founder and editor of The Living Word Magazine, Architect and chief advocate of the Building Extension Program of the General Assembly, Budget Director and Chief Architect of First Financial Program (6 yrs.), Vice Bishop (12 yrs.), and Interim Presiding Bishop. Bishop Goodman never met a stranger and was known for the unconditional love he showed towards everyone. One of his life sayings that he lived by was "How I treat you has nothing to do with the way you treat me". Preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Nathan, R.L., Ben, and Sonny Goodman, and Sister, Dorothy Chisholm, Bishop Goodman leaves to celebrate his life and carry on his legacy, a loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Melba Goodman, Sons, Dan Jr., Larry, and Kenneth Goodman, of Houston, TX and Stephen Goodman of Moreno Valley, CA., Daughters, Stephanie Anderson and Tina Pope of Houston, TX and Danita Goodman of Knoxville, TN. Brother, J.D. (Lenora) Goodman and Sister, Doris Bass of Dallas, TX., Grandchildren, Darren Goodman, Erica Beasley and Victoria Pope and Great grandson, Kayden Goodman, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. God-grandchildren, Justin and Jarvis Buchanan, Greg Elder, and Reginald Turner of Houston, TX and Miracle Butler and Torrey Chambers of Knoxville, TN, the entire church family of Temple #1, , many spiritual sons and daughters, family and friends.
