At the age of 17 Dan enlisted in the United States Army. Dan proudly served his country from 1954 to 1957 being stationed in Korea. This experience changed his life. Through the GI Bill he attended Sam Houston State University and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1960. After graduation he accepted a position with the United States Treasury Department and built a successful career of over 40 years. The friendships he developed during his career is something he always cherished.
On May 4th, 1963 Dan married the love of his life, Lynda Jean Poland. Their marriage of over 58 years was a true example of love and devotion. Together they built a successful and beautiful life. Having three daughters and seven grandchildren, family was always the most important thing. Holidays and birthdays were always celebrated in a big way. In addition to his family, Dan loved attending his kids and grandkids activities, traveling with dear friends and maintaining an active lifestyle at his beloved YMCA. UT football games were another love he shared with his family.
Dan was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Bergen, mother Harriet Bergen, and brother Lawrence J. Bergen. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lynda Bergen; three daughters, Karen Bergen, Kristen Bergen Williamson (husband Keith), and Kelli Bergen Lightsey (husband Jason). He leaves behind his seven grandchildren, Katie Williamson, Sam Williamson, Abby Williamson, Maggie Williamson, Caroline Lightsey, Ben Lightsey, and Emma Lightsey. He is also survived by his niece Nancy Pina, and two nephews Larry Bergen and Mike Bergen.
A visitation with family & friends for Dan will be held Thursday, August 5, 2021 starting at 9:00 AM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079. A funeral service will occur Thursday, August 5, 2021 from 10:30 AM with a committal service to follow immediately at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
