Daisy went to be with Jesus on February 1, 2013, and was greeted by the love-of-her-life, husband Herbert E.; her son Ronald, her parents Ida and Ira Doyle, and brothers Hershel, Ted, and Ira II (PeeWee). She leaves behind: her children Iris Sawyer, Joyce and husband Jack Bass II, and daughter-in-law, Linda Herzog. Nine grandchildren: Sherry and husband Kevin Howington, Ronald Herzog, Jr., Karen and husband Darrell Vicknair, Kenneth and wife Sherry Herzog, Kevin Herzog, Robert Sawyer, Jack Bass III and wife Katherine, Jerel Bass, and Rochelle Bass; Eight great-grandchildren: Michelle and husband Ronald Kavanaugh, Lindsey Stepan, Logan, Landon and Lane Vicknair, Kasey, Sarah and Megan Herzog; two great-great grandchildren: Briar and Brooke Kavanaugh; brothers, C. E. (Bud) and wife Doris Doyle, and Gene and wife, Lorine Doyle; sisters-in-law, Lillie, Patricia, and Betty plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and others.
She graduated from Elgin High School 1940; attended North Harris Community College and received her Real Estate License later in life and sold real estate until she retired. Daisy was a dynamic and energetic person. She and husband Herb were a wonderful team for 66 years winning their fair share of dance competitions. As a former Louise Millis dance instructor, she continued dancing and teaching everyone the box step until age 87. As a girl, she and her family performed in public dancing and her father playing the fiddle and her brothers as the band. Pappy would pass his 10-gallon hat saying, “Sister-girl why don’t you pass this hat around so these good people can show their appreciation. She was still doing the Charleston at age 87. She was a voracious reader and a wonderful story teller even making up stories as she and the boys picked cotton. They would work hard to keep up with her so they could hear the stories.
Ever the center of attention, she loved to sing as well and was known to burst into a song or two and lead people in the favorite songs, especially Jesus Love Me in her later days. She led saying grace before meals continuing at the Home.
Daisy worked as a restaurant waitress in various places, a car hop waitress (before roller skates) at Bill Williams and Stuart’s Drive-In restaurants, dance instructor at Louise Millis Dance Studio, a teller at Allright Parking Lots, a teller at Texas Commerce Bank, a clerk at Bob Tesch Properties, Inc., realtor with Century 21 Real Estate Sales, and a clerk at Prairie View A&M University and retired in 1999. She learned to use a computer at age 70 and was a favorite for registering and helping students.
Daisy was active in church and church choir; 1 of 50 women Honored for her contributions to Prairie View A&M University in 1998, Past. She was called Miss Daisy and the students loved “driving Miss Daisy” on the school golf carts. Member of Board of Governors of Chinar Grotto Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Past President of Ladies Auxiliary, Past Captain of the China Dolls Drill and Dance Team; Member and Past Captain of Daughters of the Nile Drill Team, Member of Ladies of the Shrine and Provost Guard; Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She and husband Herb worked the Shrine Circus benefiting Crippled Children’s Hospital and Burn Center for many, many years.
A visitation will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 9, 2013 in the chapel of Brookside Champions. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Garden of Memories Cemetery.
