Cynthia was born April 22, 1947, in Topeka, Kansas, to Shirley Jean and Howard Nuckles. As a child she moved with her mother to Houston, Texas, where she became a Texas history buff and very proud Texan.
Cynthia had a difficult childhood and adolescence but during her teen years she developed a strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Her relationship with Jesus was a constant in her life. And in 1964, through her activities with the Christian Student Union at her high school, she met a young man named Jim Collier from Bellaire High School and the two began a several-year courtship. On November 6, 1971, she and her beau married in San Antonio, Texas, where Jim was stationed at Fort Sam Houston. From there they moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, while Jim was stationed at Fort Bragg. On February 23, 1974, their daughter Cary Rebecca was born.
During their early married years and with a toddler at home, Cynthia supplemented their income by sewing clothes and then her “Sewn by Cyn” crafts which she and her sister sold at craft shows and home shows. But she has always been an artist, and she soon found her medium and lifelong passion in quilting. She taught at various top quilt conferences, had her own exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival and at the Texas Quilt Museum in La Grange, Texas. She also served one year as a judge for the Houston International Quilt Festival. Cynthia had a professional Facebook page with friends and co-quilters from around the world. She was a teacher and mentor to many. Thirty years ago, Cynthia started a quilting group to teach some of her friends and acquaintances how to quilt. That group named themselves The Rambo Quilters and blessed Cynthia with the title of Rabbi which means teacher. Thirty years later those ladies still meet. They are so much more than a group of quilters, they are a Circle of Sisters. They have encouraged each other spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically through all of life’s ups and downs, blessings and catastrophes. They were a very important part of Cynthia’s life.
Cynthia was a woman of strong faith. She loved her family and extended family and her daughter and grandchildren were so very important to her. Jim was the love of her life, her friend, companion and safe place.
Cynthia was preceded in death by her mother Shirley Jean Day. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Jim, her daughter and son-in-law Cary and Sean Odom, and her four grandchildren Grace, Megan, Noah and Sydney Hopkins. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Cheryl and Randy Mitchell, and her three nephews Conor (Clorissa) Mitchell, Christopher (Mary Ann) Mitchell, Calvin (Jennifer) Mitchell and her niece Flannery Mc Coy (Matt); and her seven great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Cynthia will be held Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Bay Area Presbyterian Church, 607 E. Medical Blvd., Webster, TX 77598.
