Just a couple of months after celebrating her 90th birthday with more than 160 family members in Port Isabel, Texas, our mother, Concepcion S. Ochoa, passed away in Houston on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. She was known to many as Connie or Concha, as Tia Concha to hundreds of nieces and nephews, and, most importantly, as Momo to her 15 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren.
She was born in Harlingen, Texas to her parents Ignacio and Josefa Salazar. She was mostly raised and grew up in Port Isabel, Texas where she met Isidoro Ochoa, marrying him on April 24, 1949. They continued living in Port Isabel, where she gave birth to 6 children. In January 1965, Connie and her family moved to Houston, Texas, where she lived until her death.
For a few years during the 1970s, Connie was a food service worker at Coop Elementary. Other than that short stint, she was a stay-at-home mom and lovingly raised her own kids. She then helped her children raise their kids, and then helped her grandchildren raise their own children. Later in life, she became an active member of the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church’s Altar Society, the Ladies Auxiliary, and also the Red Hatters. She was most proud of her work helping the St. Charles Food Pantry.
Our mother was preceded in death by our father Isidoro Ochoa, our sisters Maria Medina and Otilia Apodaca, and her grandson Jared Alvarez. She was also preceded in death by her parents Ignacio and Josefa Salazar, and 2 brothers, Juventino and Juan Salazar. She is survived by 3 of her sisters and 5 of her brothers. She is also survived by her son, Isidoro Ochoa, Jr., wife Mary Helen and their 28 children and grandchildren. Also surviving is son Robert Ochoa, Sr., wife Anna, and their 4 children and grandchildren. She is also survived by the 12 children and grandchildren of her late daughter Maria Medina. Connie is also survived by her late daughter Otilia Apodaca’s husband Alexander and their 7 children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her daughter Jinnie Alvarez, her husband Albert, and their 5 children and grandchildren. Finally she is survived by her son Mickey Ochoa and his husband Bart.
Connie’s children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren were the most important part of her life, and her entire family will miss her dearly.
