Clarence Lee Kelly (aka Kelly) was born on November 12, 1919 to Peter Joseph Kelly and Hulda Ann Kelly. He passed away on October 4, 2023, at 103 years, 10 months and 22 days. Houston was his home for his entire life.
Shortly after graduation from Stephen F. Austin High School, he started working at the Houston Belt and Terminal Railroad. On April 20, 1942, he entered the Army where he served in the 76th Armored Medical Battalion, 6th Armored Division. His Battalion entered France at Utah Beach, participated in the Battle of the Bulge (Bastogne, Belgium), and liberated the Buchenwald Slave Labor Camp just outside Weimar, Germany. He was honorably discharged on October 8, 1945, and returned to his job at the Houston Belt and Terminal where he then worked until retiring. While serving his country, he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. On the 70th anniversary of D-Day (June 6, 2014), he was awarded the medal of Knight in the French Order of the Legion of Honor which was presented on the USS Texas.
On January 20, 1950, Kelly married Barbara June Kelley. She remained his lifelong bride until she passed away on November 3, 2017. He is survived by his three sons, Charles D. (Danny) Adams, MD, (wife Connie), Clarence (Clancy) Lee Kelly, Jr. (wife Brenda), and David Timothy (Tim) Kelly. He has 5 grandchildren, Paxton Adams, Nathan Adams, Kylan Kelly, Krista Kelly Melancon and Kara Kelly Arevalo (husband Israel). Great-grandchildren include Trenton Guzman, Kaila and Kylan Kelly, and Ryker and Beck Melancon as well as one great-great grandchild, Bellamy Guzman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and a vast extended family that lovingly refer to him as “grandpa”.
He remained close to many lifelong childhood friends and longtime army buddies, was loved by all and will be greatly missed. He was an exceptional man and will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, military donations are welcomed.
A visitation for Clarence will be held Thursday, October 12, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Pat H. Foley & Company, 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018. A funeral service will occur Friday, October 13, 2023 at 12:00 PM, 1200 West 34th Street, Houston, TX 77018. A committal service will occur Friday, October 13, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.
