She was born on her mother’s birthday, and so to distinguish between the two equally captivating personalities, the younger was known to all as “Clarita.”
She grew up in a loving, extended family that valued loyalty, faith and education. Her aspirations to study pharmacy were upset by her country’s political circumstances, so she trained to be an accountant and worked under her father’s tutelage at the Palace Hotel, where the rich and famous stayed while in Guatemala.
Clarita saved enough money to come to Houston, TX in 1953 to visit her lifelong confidant, Oscar Cabrera. They chose to marry and raise a family based on the traditions and values that had contributed to their formation; and yet, as naturalized U.S. citizens, they also modeled respect and service to their country of residence. After the children were grown, Clarita and Oscar devoted time to such civic duties as voting, elections and neighborhood patrol.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five of her six siblings, her husband Oscar, and her daughter Carmen. She is survived by her sister Carlota Fernandez Estrada of Guatemala City, her children Patricia Cabrera, Marcella Cabrera, and Frank Cabrera, grandchildren, goddaughter Carolina Hernandez
and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Norma Pinto, her devoted caregiver, the compassionate and caring hospice staff of AccentCare, St. Jerome’s Hispanic Eucharistic Ministry for the homebound, and the special neighbors and family friends who with their visits, calls and regards brought joy to her last years, months and days.
A visitation with the family for Clara will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM in The Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 11:00 AM at St Jerome Catholic Church, 8825 Kempwood Drive, Houston, TX 77080 with a reception immediately following mass.
