Chiou-Chih (Joe) Chin, of Houston, loving father and husband, passed away on May 12, 2023. He was born in Nanjing, China, on July 8, 1947, to Chi-Tseng Chin and Fong-Ying Chang Chin. In 1948, the family moved to Taiwan. Always a serious student, Joe graduated from the prestigious National Taiwan University in 1969 and married Yu-Hong Chen (Jan) Chin in 1971. He came to America in 1977 for graduate studies in engineering at University of Texas at Arlington. A year later, Jan and their two young daughters, 5-year-old Ellen and 3-year-old Kay, joined him, bringing the family back together. He was married to Jan for 52 years. She was the love of his life.
Joe had a successful career as a mechanical engineer for Tatung Manufacturers (Taiwan); Pressure Vessels Manufacturers (2 years, Ft. Worth); Harris Graphics (5 years, Ft. Worth); and Bell Helicopter Textron (25 years, Ft. Worth) where his work was praised as “above and beyond,” significantly improving the process of H-1Torque Tube manufacturing and getting the chance to help develop the V-22 Osprey with a unique tiltrotor aircraft that achieved both vertical take-off and landing.
Joe received Christ and was baptized at Arlington Chinese Church (ACC) in 1994, along with his daughter, Kay. Joe served as a deacon at ACC from 2004-2014, leading community outreach events and ministry to the elderly. He retired from Bell Helicopter in 2011 and enjoyed traveling around the world with Jan. In 2021, they moved to Houston, closer to Ellen. Joe and Jan joined West Houston Chinese Church soon after their arrival. Joe enjoyed hiking, skiing, playing basketball, and watching the Dallas Cowboys. Whether preparing his pool for guests, making numerous trips to help his daughters and their families, or grilling out for large parties, he displayed a servant’s heart. He loved others well and was well loved by many.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, and his daughters, Ellen Chin and Kay Chin Bishop; two sons-in-law, Bing Yao and Randy Bishop; and five grandchildren, Max, Lauren, and Ella Yao; and Nathan and Elijah Bishop. He is also survived by his sister, Ching-Ju Lee Chin, and four brothers, Moses Chin, An-Shih Chin, Yee-Shih Chin, and Wei-Sheke Chin.
Joe had a heart for missions and outreach and would want to see the love of Jesus Christ and His Word spread in his honor. His favorite verse was: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28, NIV).
