Cheryl Elaine Smitheal Patton, age 70, passed away Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Born February 1, 1947, Cheryl was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She is preceded in death by her parents Robert William Smitheal and Gloria Hawkins Smitheal, brothers Rodney Lori Smitheal and Randall Lee Smitheal. She is survived by her husband John David Patton, daughter Kristen Kelly Reilly, granddaughters Sydney Elizabeth Reilly and Addison Elaine Reilly, brother, Robert William Smitheal, Jr., and wife Judith Ann Smitheal, Randall Smitheal’s wife, Deborah Tresten Smitheal, nieces and nephews Jeremy Lee Smitheal, Amanda Smitheal Tatum, Brandon Jared Smitheal, Robert William Smitheal III, Staci Smitheal Edgar, Stephanie Smitheal Baker, and a number of wonderful grandnieces and nephews.
Cheryl and her husband, David, were married for 52 years. Early in their marriage, they lived in Mexico City, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Midland, Texas, before moving back to Houston during the past several years.
During her life, Cheryl proved herself to be an exceptionally strong person who dealt with a range of very challenging health problems. The most chronic and debilitating of these issues, which she gallantly faced for nearly twenty two years, was her ongoing struggle to deal with Crest Syndrome. Crest is a disease which, among other things, gradually destroys the body’s circulatory system.
Cheryl had an extremely close relationship with her daughter Kristen and granddaughters, Sydney and Addison. Regularly, Cheryl organized trips which included a range of far reaching destinations. When she presented plans for the latest adventure, her question to the girls was always…”Is everyone on the bus?” In recent years, with Cheryl in a wheelchair, it provided a wonderful tactic to expedite passage through airport security. The foursome always had a great time together.
