Cheryl lived in New Braunfels, Texas during her younger years enjoying the small town life of river fun, camping at Camp Warneke and participating in county fair activities. She moved to Houston, Texas when she was a preteen. Cheryl attended Hamilton Middle School, where her stepfather Robert Elliot was a teacher. She then attended Waltrip High School. She gave birth to her first child, Stephanie, in 1973. Cheryl married Ronnie Joe Knight in 1974, and they added two more children, Troy Wayne in 1974 and Sylvia Brandy in 1976. She started her long career as a telephone operator at Southwestern Bell, connecting long distance phone calls manually, and even remained there through the merger with AT&T. Cheryl proceeded to master the new technology that came and went until she retired from AT&T in the early 2000’s. She then started her career as a dispatcher for city of Houston 911 Call Center. Cheryl worked there for 11 years.
Cheryl was a free spirit, and enjoyed laughing with anyone she met. She was not a person that waited for life to show up, she reached out and grabbed it; involving herself in numerous organizations and activities. Of course her three children became the center of her world. She was a T-ball coach for a minute, but found it wasn’t a good fit. Cheryl became a Girl Scout troop leader for both of her daughters, but excelled as a co-leader for 13 years for her oldest daughter. That troop was an amazing group of women and girls for so many years because of her involvement. She loved her kids so much. Cheryl made it to so many school programs, room mother being her specialty. She did it for all three of her children one year and made everything look seamless. Cheryl was very involved with her union at work and always helped plan work events.
Once her grand-children came along she became Little Oma. She relished the time with them because life was moving slower. Cheryl was very involved and showed up to every event they had, even traveling to Bedford constantly for “the boys’ lives.” When all of her family was finally together in Houston her world was complete. Cheryl spent several years being caregiver to her mother until her death in 2021. She filled so many lives with love laughter and lifelong memories.
She is survived by her three children, Stephanie Knight and her partner Bubba Jackson, Troy Knight and his wife Sherry, and Brandy Knight; her brother, David Staats and his wife Kerry; her sister, Rae Gene Greenough; nieces and nephews, Heather Staats-Musloski and husband Jason, John Fuschich and wife Danika, Katrina Staats, Shane Staats and his wife Emma, Bobbie Rae Greenough; her grand-children, Robert Knight, Sterling and Cooper Ryals, Starla and Trinity Haggerton.
