Cherlyn K. Mitchell (Cherry) was born on September 16, 1952, in Decatur, Illinois. She was the first of three children born to Fred and Laurie Kluth. She died on July 20, 2020, at her home in Katy, Texas, at the age of 67. Her father, brother Barry, sister-in-law Carla, and her mother preceded her in death. She
is survived by her sister Danna, who lives in Belton, Texas. She is also survived by her husband Randy,
son Tyler, and daughters Lauren (husband Danny Struzick), and Jenna (husband Reece Scott), as well as 7 grandchildren; Molly, Wyatt, Charlie, and Audrey Struzick, Bradley, Joy, and Shepherd Scott.
Cherry moved to Pasadena, Texas when she was in the 4th grade, and graduated from Dobie High School. In 1974, she graduated from Texas A&M University with a BS degree in geology. She found a job at NASA cataloging moon rocks before marrying Randy Mitchell on May 3, 1975, in Houston, Texas. Immediately after marriage they moved to Bakersfield, California. While in Bakersfield she was a substitute teacher. In 1978 Randy and Cherry moved to Katy, Texas where Tyler was born. After a brief stint in Cairo, Egypt, the family settled in Denver, Colorado, where they welcomed Lauren into their family. In 1986 Katy, Texas called yet again where they welcomed their 3rd child, Jenna. In 1992 they moved to Stavanger, Norway where lifelong memories were made, and in 1996 they moved back to Katy, Texas. Every time they lived in Katy, they were members at Tallowood Baptist Church. Cherry was an exceptional daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her grandkids were the joy of her life, and they knew it because there was always a hug and a lollipop waiting whenever she greeted them. She lived life vibrantly and led her kids and grandkids on many fun adventures. She wanted to show her family just how big and beautiful God’s world really is.
She dedicated her life to loving the Lord and serving His people in many ways including Sunday School teacher/director, Vacation Bible school teacher/director, Acteens, GAs and Mission Friends leader, student ministry host, Gano mission center volunteer, and church greeter to name a few. She had a passion for missions and often used her culinary skills to serve others whether feeding the homeless, hosting a small group, or cooking an extravagant meal fit for a king. Whatever she did she did it for the Lord and always made it special. From people to rain storms to flowers to rocks, she found beauty in everything. She found it because she looked for it. No matter how sick she became, she was always determined to serve others and to love like Jesus did. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like.
A celebration of life for Cherry will be held Saturday, November 14, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Rd., Houston, Texas 77024. Memorial contributions can be sent to Tallowood Baptist Church and will be distributed to Gracewood, Houston Mission Centers (Gano) and OneTribe.
