Charles VanDerrick Walker was born on May 10, 1977, to Rev. William Charles Walker, Jr. and Mrs. Giradine Elaine Walker in Jonesboro, LA. He passed from this earthly life on September 2, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones and friends at Houston Methodist-Sugar Land.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Pondexter Hobdy, Sr., Annie Lucille Gary Hobdy, Ceola Walker, and William Charles Walker, Sr.
Charles accepted Christ at a young age and attended Holy Baptist Church in Montgomery, LA, under the leadership of his father, Rev. E.D. Smith
Charles (also affectionately called “Derrick” by his family and friends) graduated from Atlanta High School and attended Northwestern State University. He served in the United States Navy. Upon the completion of his military service after working for a few years at Sam’s Club, Charles began working in May 2001 at Susman Godfrey LLP, where he was an office services clerk and then promoted to accounts payable clerk in 2012 and until his passing. In 2015, he was voted as the Betty Davis Employee of the Year by the managers and partners at the firm.
In his spare time, Charles enjoyed karaoke, cooking, and traveling—particularly to Denver, New Orleans, New York, Las Vegas, and Corpus Christi. He was a devoted fan of the Houston Astros and New Orleans Saints and loved going to games and cheering them on. He was beloved by family countless friends and colleagues, who treasured his warm smile, charming personality, keen eye for fashion, wonderful sense of humor, exceptional work ethic, generosity, and remarkable cooking skills.
Charles was united in marriage to his best friend of 23 years, Marcus Torres, on August 3, 2019. In addition to his loving and devoted husband Marcus, Charles leaves to cherish his memory his son, Charles “C.J.” Russell of Houston, TX; his parents, Rev. William C. and Giradine Walker of Atlanta, LA; two sisters, Tracey Walker of Houston, TX, and Stacey Fields of Winnfield, LA; one brother, Desmond “Nard” (Ariel) Walker of Houston, TX; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Isabel and Lydia Torres of Stafford, TX; his sister-in-law, Theresa Torres of Stafford, TX; his brother-in-law, Hector (Glenda) Torres of Bayou Vista, TX; ten nieces and nephews; three great-nephews; and several aunts, uncles cousins, and friends.
