Charles Walker was born February The 2nd, 1966 in Houston, Texas. He was the last born to George Davis Walker and Lillie Mae Walker in a large family with several great brothers and one beloved sister. Growing up in the idyllic haze of the seventies, he spent his days playing freely in the yard with siblings and friends. With such games as tag, making mud balls, setting up army men, and smoothing out dirt roads which would later inspire a career designing them.
A fast runner, he played street football and joined track at Reagan High School. In the vibrancy of the eighties, he was surrounded by music and crazed hairstyles. He resisted the trends of overrated pop such as Michael Jackson and Madonna; instead blasting Southern Rock such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and The Marshall Tucker Band, Rock such as AC/DC, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin; and Metal such as Quiet Riot.
He kept his love for classic rock throughout his life, introducing it to his children; overtime including nineties grunge such as Bush and Stone Temple Pilots, and modern alternative rock such as Cage The Elephant and Twenty One Pilots. His voice was a sort of music, soft and sweet, his words like lyrics, full of meaning and advice.
To his friends his nickname was Sam, and Sam was always there anytime anyone needed him, whether it be friends, family, or strangers. He had many interests, from The Houston Cougars to Pirates, from Clint Eastwood Films to Cryptozoology, but above all he was interested in Treasure. Sam was an avid adventurer, treasure hunter, and explorer. He'd read old books on buried treasure and archeology.
He began with metal detecting in historical areas of Houston, and on the beaches of Galveston. Then soon enough, traversed deep into the Swamps of Louisiana, dived off the coasts and into the caves of Florida; he would travel through vast deserts, thick forests, caverns, and onto mountains above clouds. He enjoyed going on these expeditions with his family, often his son Nicolas, and Nephews David and Ray. He enjoyed working outdoors and he spent months at sea on a ship exploring and surveying for oil, the lifeblood of Texas.
He worked as a surveyor, field engineer, party chief and foreman, laying out roads throughout Houston and across Southeast Texas. If you're driving in the Houston area, you're more likely than not, on a road, bridge, or highway laid out or built by him.
In 1995, Sam met the love of his life, Misty. They had three children, Valerie, Melody who was named for his love of music, and Nicolas.
He devoted his life to his family, and was always there for them, providing for and teaching them.
His adventurous spirit only grew in his later years, ever hopeful and happy. He meant so much to so many, his life was one well lived and such a life can't find space upon the page of a mere obituary. He now leads a grand expedition into the heavens. On that expedition he is joined by his late brothers, Paul and Terry, his cousin, Denny "The King of Galveston Island", his mighty uncles, his father, family, and forebears further more.
He is survived by his Dear Wife, Misty Walker, his Best Friend and Son Nicolas, his Loved Daughters Melody and Valerie. His Nephew, David, who is much like a son. His grandchildren, Damien and Evelynn, with a third on the way. His Sweet Sister, Karen Walker. His Wise Brothers, Jimmie and Robert Walker. His brother, The Kind William "Bill" Walker, and his Icelandic Viking half-brother Björn Emerson. He is also survived by many wonderful nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
His Legacy Remains, His Journey Continues.
As he was there for us, we will be there for him for Visitation on Monday, March 21st, from Noon to Two. Followed by a Funeral Service and Burial at Brookside Memorial Park.
