Charles Straub, 92, entered into eternal life on January 6, 2011. He was born in Camden, NJ to Marguerite V. Smith and Howard Siebert Straub and grew up in Merchantville, NJ. Like many young men of his generation, Charles proudly enlisted in and became an officer in the Army Air Corp from 1942-1946. While serving in the Army he met and married a ranking officer and registered nurse, Anne Catherin Lehde. After the war Charles, Anne, and their first child returned to New Jersey where he worked at Sun Oil and attended night classes at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. After earning his degree Charles “took a leap of faith” and moved his young family to Houston, Texas in 1950. He worked as an accountant for Tennessee Gas/Tenneco until his retirement in 1980. He and Anne raised six children.
Sports were his lifelong passion and he was an accomplished cartoonist. His love of sports was fulfilled by ushering at many sporting events (football, baseball, basketball, and track) at Rice University in Houston, TX for over 50 years. He was thrilled to be inducted into Rice University’s “Sports Hall of Fame”. As an honorary “Rice Owl” Charles closely followed all Rice athletics, cheering their victories and agonizing over their defeats.
