He was born on the 7th of June 1930 to parents, Grace Mayr and Herschel F. Dunn, Sr. of Waco, Texas. He graduated from South Waco High School in 1948 where he served in a number of leadership roles including that of Yell Leader for his spirited South Waco Tigers. He attended Texas A & M University and graduated in 1952 with a Bachelors of Science in Geology. He was and remains a proud and true Texas Aggie who loved the lore and tradition that characterizes his alma mater. He proudly served his country at Heartbreak Ridge in the Korean War.
On the 5th of May 1954, he married the love of his life and his equal in every way, Frances Rae Holmes.
He later pursued his passion for learning and attended law school at South Texas College of Law, graduating in 1966 with his JD. He entered private practice and served as a trial lawyer until 2010. He also served as Municipal Judge of West University Place for many years. He loved the practice of law, his partners, his colleagues in the profession, his clients and his juries. He often commented that he was fortunate to have practiced with, among, against and in front of the finest lawyers and judges in Texas.
In 1979, he honored his profession by serving as President of the Houston Bar Association and again, in 1991 by serving as President of the State Bar of Texas. He was the first South Texas College of Law graduate to serve in either capacity at that time.
He was named Distinguished Alumnus of South Texas College of Law in 1991.
For the last 51 years, he was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon, Elder, Trustee and Sunday School teacher.
He was loved and beloved by many in ways that transcend words---a dear, sweet, caring and compassionate man who lived his life as Christ taught and in so doing, touched so many lives in extraordinary ways. His wonderful smile, quick sense of humor and warmth were his trademarks and leave indelible marks on those he leaves.
He is preceded in death by his parents, the late Grace and Herschel Dunn, Sr. and his brother, the late Herschel Dunn, Jr.
He is survived by his bride of 58 years, Fran, his daughters, Amy Taylor and husband, Robert, Beth Plummer and husband, Jim, as well as those in whom he delighted the most, his loving, wonderful and exceptional grandsons, Travis, Chris and Andrew Plummer. He loved, adored and admired them all, as they did him.
The memorial service is to be conducted half-past ten o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 3rd of May, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 5308 Buffalo Speedway, in West University Place, where Rev. Jeff Smith, Pastor, and Dr. M. Douglas Harper, Pastor Emeritus, are to officiate.
