Lindy, one of eight children, was born in Orange, TX. to parents John Talmadge Garrett and Georgia Gaines. He was raised in Orange, graduated from Orange High School in 1944, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 during WW II. Upon his return to Orange, he met Avis Marie Fewell and they were married on July 24, 1948. They moved to Houston for Lindy to attend the University of Houston where he received a B.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering. He worked in the oil patch for many years and then for the Alfa Laval Separator Co. After leaving Alfa Laval, he began his own Manufacturers Representative Business called Mainstream Technology until retiring in 2000.
Lindy was a long time member of St. Stephens Methodist Church where he served as an usher. He and Marie were leaders of the Methodist Youth Fellowship while in Marietta, Georgia. Lindy was always involved in his children’s activities. He and Marie were Coaches of the Girls’ softball league at the Oaks Dad’s Club for many years. He loved taking his family on summer vacations, and especially loved the “Garrett” family reunions. They had many friends, with whom they played bridge and bingo, and traveled. Mostly, Lindy was the most loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather that anyone could hope for. He never met a stranger and never had an enemy. Friends were blessed to have known him and all were touched by his smile and warmth.
Lindy is survived by his daughter Linda and partner Donna of Canyon Lake, TX; son Charles Jr; daughter Marsha de Armas; and granddaughter Lindsey de Armas, all of Houston. There are 3 precious great grandchildren: Tyler Marie Moquin, Ryleigh Ann Moquin, and Gavin Ryder de Armas.
The family will receive friends and family at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway (I10) in Houston on January 7, 2017 from 11:30 to 12:30. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Memorial Oaks Chapel at 12:30, and interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lindy's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 6055 South Loop East, Houston, TX 77087-1005 or online at www.alz.org/texas
