Charles Henry (Bro) Cotton went home to the Lord on April 8th, 2024 at the age of 78 in Houston, TX. He proudly served in the US Army from 1965 to 1973 during the Vietnam era. He was employed at the US Postal Service as an electronic technician for 34 years, he trained and received multiple certifications for the running and repair of postal machines and later became a supervisor until his retirement.
Charlie loved our Creator and the Bible, he was a member of Houston’s First Baptist Church since 1993, and a member of Sunday School Bible Study under David Self. He was a volunteer and mentor in the central unit in Sugarland, Texas. He provided advice out of love and with wisdom, he always announced how good Jesus is and how much He loves us.
He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Ruth Cotton for 39 years, they loved to go for rides and out to lunch, they always did everything together and their time was full of laughter. They knew each other like the back of their hands and completed each other’s sentences. They loved caring for and spending time with their dogs, Toby (1985), Dougie (2001), and Rebel (2021).
Charlie loved to plant and take care of a garden, but the squirrels always had different plans. He was an outdoorsman and jack-of-all-trades: able to fix any engine or machine, able to carry out home improvement projects single-handedly, and even knew how to repair computers and electronics. He also knew his way around Strong’s Concordance of the Bible and encouraged everyone to worship the Lord and apply Biblical wisdom to our lives.
He had beautiful memories of his brothers and their friendship. He loved visits from his children and grandchildren, and was always eager to teach anybody “how to.” He always spoke of fond memories and good times. He was an excellent grill master and smoker specialist, and bragged whenever someone complimented his skill level.
He was a talker, whoever visited, when it was time to go, it took them 30 minutes to get out of the door. He was a jokester and always in good spirits. He was a devoted and loving husband, son, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.
The legacy that our beloved gramps leaves behind is a long-lasting and overwhelmingly positive one; he was an intelligent and physically strong and capable man, yet he prioritized serving and caring for his family, sharing his wisdom and never shying away from a hard day’s work. He understood that God and Family should always come first, the type of love and memories from a great man like this is impossible to forget.
Preceded in death by his mother, Bertie Cotton, his father Robert Cotton, brothers Bob Cotton and Johnny Cotton, sister Mamie Zinn; and brother in law, Alfred Gallegos.
He is survived by his sister, Floann Wooten, his children Stephanie and husband Clay Whorton, Michael and his wife Jaqueline Cotton, Charlie Cotton, Carrie and husband Leon Schneider, and step-sons Roland Gonzales and Mark Gonzales. Also survived by grandchildren Jennifer Scroggins, Michelle Dickey, Shelby Dickey, Elisabeth Whorton, Stacey and husband Benjamin Nix, Lauren and husband John VanBruggen, Michael Cotton, Heather Cotton, James Cotton, Lyndon Cotton, Wyatt and his wife Bayle Cotton, Brandon Cotton, Stephen and wife Mindee Schneider, Sean Schneider, Gabrielle and husband Andres Garcia, Roland Wayne Gonzales II, Jonathan and wife Natalia Gonzales, Daniella Gonzales, as well as more than 10 great-grandchildren.
Charlie enjoyed Charles Stanley’s saying - “Obey God and leave the consequences to Him”, and discussed so many Bible Verses that we’re not sure if he could even pick a favorite. Charlie faithfully offered his mind, body, soul, and spirit to our Heavenly Creator long before April 8th, we thank God for taking care of him during his life on this earth and to Jesus for redeeming us and providing the assurance of seeing our loved ones again one day.
