Pastor Charles Carter, Sr. was born June 18, 1937 in Northeastern, Louisiana to the late Ike and Lenora Carter. He was educated through the Morehouse Parish School System, receiving his diploma from Morehouse Training High School in 1956. Pastor Carter then furthered his education at Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Houston Baptist University, Houston, Texas. On November 14, 1973, he was united in holy matrimony to his helpmeet and lover, Linda Rae Bowers.
Pastor Carter accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Ollie Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Collinston, Louisiana. Upon the family’s relocation to Bastrop, Louisiana, he united with the Saint Phillips Missionary Baptist Church.
Secular employment led him to Houston, Texas where he united with the Northside Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J.C. O’Connor. He later united with the New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with the late Rev. W.J. Profit as his pastoral leader. His forty plus years of membership at New Jerusalem includes his ordination as a Deacon; his surrender to the call to preach; and after delivering his first sermon, his licensure into the gospel ministry and later ordination.
In 1974, his pastoral ministry began at the St. Thomas Missionary Baptist Church of Moss Bluff (Liberty), Texas. In March, 1975 he answered the pastoral call of the Strait Life Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. With the aid of the Holy Spirit, he faithfully served at Strait Life for forty-four (44) years with his passion to reach people with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Twelve (12) sons in the ministry are a living testament to this Man of God! Sons in the Ministry include: Pastor Phillip Suber, Sr., Pastor Chedrick Crosley, Minister John Eric Carter, Pastor Chris Carter, Pastor Charles Carter, Jr., Minister Joshua Carter, Minister Timothy Washington, Minister Johnny Freeman, Pastor Bracey Lovelady, Minister Jeremiah Carter, Pastor O’Neal Edwards, and Pastor Charles N. On Saturday, March 27, 2021 “while it was yet dark”, Pastor Carter heard the welcoming voice of his Lord and Saviour saying, come on home and rest from your labors, your battle has been well fought and the victory has been well won.
In addition to his parents; Pastor Carter was preceded in eternal rest by his four brothers Herman, Johnny Louis, Isaac and Lee Otis; and two sisters Lethia Joy Preston and Rosie Lee Lewis. His son, Ronald Anthony was tragically taken from the family on August 18, 2004 and his grandson Ronald “Duece” II after an eighteen (18) month medical journey due to a previously misdiagnosed condition, was called home to glory on December 16, 2014.
Those who remain to cherish his memory and carryout his legacy include his devoted and loving wife, Linda; four (4) sons Pastor Charles, Jr. (Michelle); Pastor Chris (Brandelene); Minister Jeremiah and Willie D. Preston, Jr. Two Goddaughters, Lakeshia Randle and Tasha Henry and his niece/daughter, Monica (Johnny) Freeman are also mourning the homegoing of Pastor Carter. PawPaw is mourned by six (6) granddaughters (Savannah, Brailyn, Johnise, Kerstyn, Tania and Kharsyn), and four (4) grandsons (Christopher II, Charles III, Caleb and John Anthony).
Many nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives, friends, the Strait Life Church family and fellow Co-Laborers in the Gospel mourn this Loving and Faithful Servant of The Most High God!
Benediction as Offered by Pastor Charles Carter, Sr.:
For we have read in the scriptures that when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled. (Lord, help our unbelief!) Brethren…Let us pray, let us move forward on our knees.
Shake the hands of the one next to you and tell them, “I Love You”!
