The family relocated to Houston in 1946 and settled in the Heights, where they united with ‘The Second Baptist Church’ where Reverend H.P. Perry served as Pastor.
As a little boy, Charles was given the nickname “Bucky” and the name became his, for always. Bucky was educated at 23rd Avenue Elementary School, Harper Junior High, and Booker T. Washington High School. On the weekends and during the summer of his high school years, Bucky cut hair nearly every day, off and on all day, for the teens and young men in the neighborhood. As a teenager, Bucky loved to dance, and dance he did, especially at the B Bop (28th Street Dance Hall) for teenagers only. From ages 16 to 19, he owned the dance called the “Kool Jerk” and the girls thought he danced really well. He was never without a dance partner.
Bucky joined the United States Marines and served a 20 year stint. He received the ‘Sharp Shooter’ Badge using a rifle and he was made Master Sergeant. While serving his tour of duty, Bucky met and married Karen Larson. To this union, three children were born, Charles Jr. (Charlie), Kevin, and Sarah. Years after returning to Houston, he reunited with the Church Without Walls, where he worshiped until his homegoing. He was deeply loved and will truly be missed by all. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Those left to cherish Charles’s memory are his two sons; Charles Jr. (Charlie) and his wife Amber; Kevin, and his daughter Sarah; his grandchildren Lennox, Lyric, Bentley, and Brooks; his sister, Willie Ruth, three brothers, Robert (Percy) and his wife Carolyn, Kenneth and his wife Linda, Stavice and his wife Veronica; Fascia, his beloved significant other, and her daughter Amy and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Bucky was preceded in death by his mother, Lizzie, sister Virgie, brother Maurice (Cheetah), and Alvin Ray.
