Carson E. Courtney, Sr. died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at 2:00 a.m. Carson was born August 14, 1924, in Angelina County, Texas, to Marion Calvin Courtney and Julia Jordan Courtney. He is predeceased by his wife and love of his life, Lois E. Courtney, and five siblings. He is survived by daughter, Shirley and husband Robert Morris; son Carson E. Courtney, Jr, and wife Sherleen; daughter, Nelda and husband Rayman Hounsel; 3 grandchildren; Robert Jr., Gina, and Carla; and 6 great-grandchildren; Jaclyn, Trevor, Madilyn, Robert III, Victoria and Fiona.
In childhood, Carson attended a “brush arbor” church in East Texas, loved to sing the lively hymns, and learn about the Bible. Other than sermons and Sunday School lessons, he was self-taught in scripture and began to preach in his early teens. At age 18, he married the love of his life, Lois, and together they began to conduct youth services and revivals in the Pentecostal Church of God. Soon it was time to focus on having a family, and they settled in Austin, Texas to pastor a small church and help facilitate their growth into a new larger building. Other church plantings and growth continued through his years of pastoring.
As the years passed, Carson accepted a job with Exxon working in maintenance and safety and was able to accrue a retirement pension, not available through the church. He retired with pension and he and Lois retired to country life in Point Bank, TX where they raised beautiful vegetables and roses and were active members in the Assembly of God church there. Some heart problems and progressive Alzheimer’s disease ultimately dictated their return to Houston for better healthcare and to be closer to family. The caregivers at Park Manor Quail Valley have been faithful to make Dad feel comfortable, taken care of, and loved. The family greatly appreciates them.
