Carolyn Cannon was born July 31, 1939 in Fairmont, West Virginia. She was born in Cook Hospital and weighed seven pounds and nine ounces. We know this because she was an avid genealogist, photographer and scrapbooker. And we have the pictures to prove it. Her family moved to Texas in 1952 and her parents opened Allart Picture Framers. The first business was in their home before it burned down and moved to a store front on Westheimer. This began her family’s ties to The Shriners. She attended Lanier Junior High School, then San Jacinto High School where she was a member of the Golden Gauchos Drum & Bugle Corp. Her first job was in 1956 at the River Oaks Theatre where she earned sixty cents an hour, netting her $20.64 on her first paycheck. She graduated from Lamar Sr. High School in 1957 and was accepted to the University of Texas. She pledged Phi Mu and was later president of the Houston Phi Mu Alumni Chapter. While at UT – Austin, she worked at the Varsity Theatre where she met William “Bill” Cannon. They were married on August 8, 1959 and celebrated 54 years together before Bill’s passing in 2013. In 1963, they moved to Pasadena, Texas and bought a home on Huckleberry Street. Both Bill and Carolyn were active members at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church serving in a variety of roles, including altar guild and hand bells. In 1967 she became an American Red Cross Life Saving instructor. In 1968 she began her role as a Girl Scout leader. Culminating in her serving on the Board for San Jacinto Girl Scouts of America. In 1970, she organized the Rotary Ann of South Houston and was the first president. In 1980, she graduated from San Jacinto Junior College with an emphasis in photography. In 1982 she went to work for Foley’s for nine years. In 1988, Bill bought her a blue Mustang convertible. Convertibles were a long-time passion of hers owning one up to her death. In 1990, she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Bill and Carolyn built their dream retirement home on Lake Conroe in 1999. She is a cancer survivor, a Starbucks connoisseur, and a bit of a philanthropist. She was an avid lover of dogs, especially poodles, as she was never without one at her side.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Carolyn’s memory to any of her favorite charities, UT Austin – McCombs School of Business, Girl Scouts of the USA, Shriners Hospital, or St. Jude’s Hospital.
