Caroline graduated from San Jacinto High School and attended Texas Women’s University in Denton. It was when Caroline was attending Helen Ann Bailey as her Maid of Honor that she first met Lloyd J. Gregory, Jr., M.D., who was also attending as Best Man. The two shortly thereafter wed at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Houston in 1945.
One of Caroline’s joys in life was giving back to the Houston community. She was appointed by Governor Bill Clements to the Battleship Texas Foundation, for which she served over 20 years before retiring in 2005. During this time, she helped raise millions of dollars for the ship’s 1983 and 1992 fundraising campaigns.
Caroline was an active member in the Harris County Medical Society Women’s Auxiliary, the Magic Circle Republican Women’s Club, and St. Luke’s Methodist Church. She also served as President of the San Jacinto Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, President of the River Oaks Garden Club, as well as President of Holly Hall Retirement Home Advisory Board. Caroline loved attending bible study at St. Martin’s with her close friends. She and Lloyd were members of River Oaks Country Club and the Colonel Club.
Her greatest joy were her seven grandchildren, whom she was known by as “Mimi”. For several summers, Caroline held “Mimi’s Manners” camp for all of them. She also was an avid tennis player.
Caroline is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd J. Gregory, Jr., M.D., her father, Robert Edwin Kemp, her mother, Elbie Kemp, and her brother-in-law Charles Rudloff. She is survived by her three children, Lloyd J. Gregory III, Anthony Kemp Gregory and his wife Karen, and Carole Gregory Lawson and her husband David. Her grandchildren include Anna Gregory Thomas, Paige Gregory Heimann, Mary C. Lawson Corrigan, Laura Lawson Langmade, Hope Gregory Pereira, Hayden Elizabeth Lawson, and Anthony Kemp Gregory, Jr., in addition to 6 great grandchildren.
The Gregory family would like to thank Caroline’s caregivers, Elisa Martinez, Birtza Valero, and Edith Elias, as well as the Hallmark staff, for their loving care. The Gregory family would also like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Boehme.
A memorial service and celebration of Caroline’s life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Monday, the 16th of January, at The Hallmark, 4718 Hallmark Drive in Houston, where her son, Lloyd J. Gregory III, will officiate.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions in her name be directed to the Battleship Texas Foundation, Attn: Bruce Bramlett, Executive Director, One Riverway, Suite 220, Houston, TX 77056.
